I really like the intercessors marine models and would like to make them into Sternguard, without using green stuff to model. What bits or whatever could I use to kit bash Sternguard using intercessors and are the bits compatible?

Well depending on what style of vets you want, most of the time its mostly just extra gribbles, crux terminatus, helmets and combi weapons.

you can probably get loose sternguard bits like the special issue bolter round belt clips, and some dangly bits on ebay. depending on the kit you may need to press mold the crux on or otherwise buy some shoulder pads from stern or vanguard kits.

helmets you can probably go nuts on it or do helmetless doods.

thank you....what really constitutes a "Sterngaurd?" model. I mean, couldn't I just paint their helms white and cal it a day (bare minimum which id not do) if we get down to it?

I mean i wouldn't care but your locals might.

it depends on what they see as adequate effort.

And what absolutely makes a vet is at the bare minimum, the crux terminatus.

So as a START then I need to round up 10 shoulder pads with the crux terminatus. Are intercessor and tac Maines should pads same size? I was thinking a couple of the GW upgrade sprue fo the cool helmets and the U engraved shoulders UM upgrade pack? Im not trying to "save" money, so not worried about expenses in making them look credible.

edit: actually i believe the shoulder pads are the same and should fit the normal non push fit kits. as iirc i believe some folks here had done it. but i realize i never did it so not sure.

Shoulderpads and heads are 100% compatible. OK, 100% might be a stretch, as always some things might clip, like dangly bits on the pads, etc. I’ve been using the DW pads to make Fortis kill teams.

Bare minimum would be white helmet/trim, with the elite/crux marking on the shoulder. This can be done with base kits and paint and transfers.

But you should try to get the vet shoulderpads and roll them around your bits box a few times.

One thing that might cause an issue is that there is the indomonous crusade veteran formation thing in the Vigulus book. So with a few command points it’s possible to get a squad of veteran intercessors. This makes WYSWYG and counts-as a little fuzzy. I suspect in casual play the rule of cool will override any objections.

Why do you assume the OP is playing Ultras?

From the Space Marine codex 8th edition.

"Most Sternguard Veterans carry boltguns or combi-bolters with meticulously crafted sights and modified scopes. Heavier weapons are also available for tank-hunting or infantry-eradication roles...."

I would note that it says "most", so if more than half the squad has a weapon and/or equipment more elaborate than a rank and file Intercessor and a paint job that in someway distinguishes them from your regular marines that would be okay in my humble opinion.

I think once you start painting them differently you're going to want to add more bling as you go along. Just don't go full SternApothLibrariaNator. Or do, I'm not cop.

Few non-Ultramarine players talk about using the UM upgrade pack.

I don't think you'd need crux pads. Remember the wee terminator honour dangly bits. Some of them and a few purity seals and you'd be golden.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
