How would you guys go about painting black gemstones, eg. black pearls?

There was an ork inn the gallery recently, with black armor done nicely..

Perhaps something like that for the gemstones, with a green tint?

The pearls might work with just a deep black, gloss varnish and a white sheen

First you must decide what kind of black you're black pearl is, is it blue-black, purple-black, green-black, or grey-black? I would start with the darkest color(midnight blue for example) of your choice, then use kantor blue to layer it slightly brighter in the middle leaving the edges dark blue, you can go the easy way and apply blue wash, then black wash, then brush on gloss varnish and let IRL lights do the shine reflection for you.

If you want to paint on the reflective highlights, you must decide where the lights is coming from, and make it consistent throughout the model, do a search on 'black pearl' and look at the images for reference.

Difficult to say, given the variety of black pearl references,

To achieve the ones that took my fancy most, I'd paint it white, then purple to get a decently saturated colour. Black shading toward the bottom and turquoise for the highlight, both wet blended. Spot of white for the reflection.
