Subject: Deathguard Defiler. Worth it?

Hi all,
I'm reaching the point where I am looking to expand my Death Guard and I am giving serious consideration to getting a Defiler.
Currently I run a Daemon engine heavy list with 2 PBCs, 2 drones and 3 Blight Haulers supported by Plague Marines.
The Defiler looks good to me with a Reaper Autocannon and Scourge - offering me some shooting as I advance but with the ultimate aim of getting into combat.
My main concern is more the practicality of it as an assault unit of that size may be restricted where cover exists.
Anyone have any experience recently of using one and how it went..

As a fellow DG player i would advise agaisnt the defiler. the problem is that is doesnt really excell at anyone thing, it tries to be good at both melee and shooting and kinda misses the mark on both. personally what i would suggest is to get some dreadnaughts, they can be kitted for heavy ranged or melee or somewhere in between. on tops of this many people in my experience find the defiler intimidating and pour shots into it immediately because of this. hope this helps

Winning isn't necessarily about being the strongest, the toughest, or even the best. Often times he who perseveres wins. |

Long and short of it: no.
He needs Demonforge to work alright, and then your soaking up 1 CP/turn. He is very unreliable. They work best in CSM, but even then... you have better stuff to spend your points on.
When they get to CC they can do a ton of damage, the problem is getting them there reliably, and then its all dice and luck. I ran two in a recent battle report on Youtube and they did not impress (and I purposely didn't take Warptime aas well)

Yeah, i am a huge defiler fan, but they work best in a tson army where they get a lot of synergy and power boosts from different places (Spells, heralds, deamon princes, mutaliths all can boost its abilities to stupid levels). From what i see there isnt much death guard can offer (or nurgle for that matter) to a defiler.
Now the dg trait on cheap hellbrutes, that is awsome. Moving and firing heavy weapons makes them much more mobile than any other chaos hellbrutes in reguards to mobile fire power and consistency.
