I’ve been struggling with my primer. Rust-Oleum white killed 3 Death Guard, it left a powdery texture over parts. Rust-Oleum grey is much better but still not perfect and it’s getting on my nerves. I’m wondering if there’s a more reliable option for a totally smooth result, regardless if it’s a bit more expensive. I should note I’m in the UK.

I’m priming in doors, it’s not super hot or cold, I’m shaking the can for a few minutes, I’m not spraying too far away and I’m giving the models a quick rinse first.

Look at their stomachs, knee pads etc, that’s the issue. http://i.imgur.com/IidBNFW.jpg (and that’s after 24 hours in Dettol).

I use Hycote grey primer for plastics and it seems to be pretty reliable. I've gone through 4 cans recently and all have performed well.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

first thing, is to bear in mind that primer is not supposed to be a smooth finish. its supposed to provide a surface for your paint to bite onto. if its leaving big particles of powder, than that isn't good, but if its a light powdery coating then that's not a problem. I actually prefer that to an even finish as you're losing less details.

From your photo, it doesn't actually really look like a problem. seeing fresh results would help though.. I feel as though your expectations for finish are higher than they need to be, as rustoleum is pretty decent. Remember, your primer is going to be hidden. don't worry if it doesn't leave a perfect finish.

Personally, I use the $1 can of flat black from Home Depot (dunno if those exist in Spain). It’s a grey can, says flat black, and has a red, green and blue dash on it. Cheap, and it covers pretty well. I also use Krylon grey and the $0.97 white from Wal-Mart. All three work well for me.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Gw primer is not proper primer though, it's just spray paint, expensive spray paint at that.

Halfords grey spray primer (or even the plastic primer one) are my go to primer. I am also a fan of the grey tone that comes out.

If you're in the UK, Halfords.

The primer so good, even FW use it instead of GW spray paints.

Idk if you can get it where you’re at but duplicolor sandable primer is probably the best rattle can primer.

I use Tamiya fine surface primer. The result is reaaally good, but it is expensive, almost 14 euros for 180ml.

I use Halford's too. Unfortunately they don't do a black primer but I've heard good things about the GW black primer (the UK one anyway).

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I'd second that. Tenacious adhesion, very good sandability, just gorgeous. But as noted not cheap...and I'll add quite noxious being a lacquer. If you dont have a proper spray booth, get thee outdoors, and even then I'd don the respirator.

I would recommend you not prime indoors. Nevermind the health concerns, the clean up is going to be an eventual pain in the ass (especially if this is a public building used by others, think of the children!!).

Either get yourself outdoors, or airbrush prime indoors.

I am recently in love with Army Painter. Wonderful primers.

My only issue is the nozzle: I had to collect a few exaust nozzle to have a few different spray option (because the standard ones that comes with the can is even too big and spread too much for a 28mm scale).

I've also used them by mistake on some unwashed resin that was still carrying oil residue form the mold... and I haven't even noticed. That primer sticks on everything.

I can't condone a place where abusers and abused are threated the same: it's destined to doom, so there is no reason to participate in it.
