This might be a little confusing. Jets can fly over infantry and units without worrying about going around them. But can they do the same with units that have the fly keyword? Or do they have to give them space because technically they are taking up the same airspace?

I ask this because I’m wondering if I could drop 3 spore mines 5” away from each other to create a screen for a jet. Seeing as how it cannot get its base within 1” of the screening units because they are also flying in the air. It might be forced to pivot itself off the board and suicide itself?

If you have FLY, you can move over other units and terrain as if they weren't there.

This includes other units with FLY.

Agreed. FLY has no exceptions if the other unit also has the FLY keyword.

To confirm what Ghaz and JNA stated, models with FLY can ignore any other model when they move, regardless of what keywords the model being ignored has.

Thanks all for replying. Just seems a little crazy to me now that a fly unit can screen a troop from walking under it. But nothing can stop flyers at all.

Guess I shouldn’t be applying so much logic to the game

Just because a unit can FLY, doesn't mean it always does. Jets and what not probably do, but things like Crisis Suits frequently land on the ground. They're really hopping from place to place. They're not really just flying around in the air. Same with Jump Pack Marines. They're not really just flying around. They're JUMP packs ...not FLY packs.

This is a game where Flamethrowers can automatically hit a hypersonic voidcraft flying a mile above the battlefield but can't hit someone who starts running at you from too far away. Logic is the very last thing you should try to apply to 40k.

Also Flyers could be anywhere within a huge range of possible heights, so could easy avoid each other.

Thanks again.

Really my problem with the rule is the jets. And how it can be used as a screen, but there us nothing in the game that can dictate its movements. No wonder Eldar keep winning.

It just seems flyers should be able to say. “This is my air space. You can’t go here.”

Logic would say that airspace is (gasp!) 3D. Meaning, you can fly under or over something. Such revolutionary thought, isn't it?

Maybe you should actually read your codex then, because last time I checked, flamer range is 8 inches, not a mile. Or stop cheating if you actually were targeting units a mile away

Vertical distance is ignored. So even if the model is a mile above, you can still hit it, so long as the horizontal is within 8".

Vertical distance isn't ignored. It's just you can measure base to base, so it's irrelevant.

It's just a disconnect between the abstraction of the game and the reality in the setting it's supposed to represent.
