Subject: Should I delay collecting an Imperial Guard army?

Iam watching videos online about the Siege of Vraks so Iam quite into the Imperial Guard atm. I’d like to start a new army of Guard in the foreseeable future but GW is putting some amazing kits out at a voracious pace. Iam very concerned that I would start the army only for them to do new Cadians, greatcoat Guard or even a totally new regiment. The jump in quality from the old Cadian range to their new stuff is that extreme IMO.
Do you think this is reasonable? Is it on the horizon that they would go back to Guard in a big way. I feel blowing up Cadia leaves the door open to a new regiment becoming the Guard poster boys.
I had considered just being conservative and doing a tank regiment or Stormtroopers. Then I could add infantry later. But then obviously with Siege of Vraks Iam leaning more into an infantry regiment.

I really doubt they're going to change up the Guard anytime this year... supposedly their doing a massive sisters of battle release later this year, and they're in the middle of a massive chaos release now. I don't think that Guard will get new models too. So if you wanna wait a year or two, maybe? But the Cadian models are pretty sweet as is, so why bother waiting.

They’re nice. But I don’t like the idea of in 3 years time the army being invalidated. It’s a busy year now, buts it’s impossible to say what might come out next year as the rate of releases is so much faster than it used to be even accounting for the Primaris and Chaos focus atm.

Guard is low priority at the moment. The codex is good so there is no uproar about our older models. On the tabletop they look fine as is with a good paint job.
As old as the models are, I dont see a Cadian model and think this its crap.

I can't see cadians becoming "invalidated" ever, really. At least not for the forseeable future. They're basically the Imperial Guard's Ultramarines. Sure, their home world blew up, but millions got off planet, and are probably gonna make a new home called "new cadia", and they'll keep going.

I think its a good idea to wait out the summer to seewhat the next 40k release after chaos marines is going to be.
While the rumor pic vehicle is -probably- a new primaris one, its got enough similarity tonthe Taurox and Mechanicus vehicles that theres a chance it'll be for the militarum.
Also the blackstone fortress traitor guard, amd the mortal attendants to the new dark apostle seem to hint at some kind of a wider traitor guard release, and a revamped guard line this year or next would be a great mirror to that.
Also seeing what is in the pipeline for Necromunda: I suspect that the Palantine Enforcers will be a design very desirable to use as Scions...

are you looking for GW or FW official only, because there are 3rd party companies like Madrobot miniatures, Victoria Miniatures, and others in EU that make superb parts to match with existing GW kits or whole new regiments.
A little customization goes a long way on existing old kits to make them fresh and brilliant.

I can get that. I guess the question you have to ask yourself is which worst-case scenario will make you feel the most regret?
A. Buying a bunch of guard kits only to see them updated immediately after you've put them together.
B. Waiting for new kits only to realise that you've been waiting for several years and missed the opportunity for literal years worth of games.
Personally, I'd hold off, as I've got a gut feeling that guard players won't have to wait for an update as long as we may think. In the mean time, I'd mitigate the potential regret from scenario B, by ensuring I took up something equally satisfying in the interim. Is there another army that gets you excited? Armies that are unlikely to have stuff replaced for years to come are Custodes, Ad Mech, Deathwatch, Knights, Primaris/Vanguard Space Marines, Death Guard, Thousand Sons, Drukhari and Genestealers, (Harlequins ) as their ranges are all relatively new.
You could always shift your focus to another game system entirely while you wait and check out some other stuff: Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, Warhammer Underworlds, Necromunda, Blood Bowl or something outside of the Games-Workshop brand entirely. It's nice to mix things up sometimes.

Do yourself a favour and collect Catachans. They are badass in every way and you even get to deploy Sly Marbo. So don´t hesitate and order them straight away.

I find myself in the same predicament right now. I got some catachans from a friend a few years ago and I added some more catachan infantry a long the way. Right now I painted 30 with 30 more to go and found myself thinking, what if there will be some new bling catachans? But I try to keep telling me that I like the sillyness and "over the top"-ness of the old models and dont care if they get new ones. Its a bit tough but I really got used to the catachans. Now I just hope there will be a completely new regiment and not new catachans haha. I am gonna add some scions soon, I am on the safe side with them, their range is new.

I think, canonically, everywhere is "New Cadia". The codex mentions Cadian units being used to train other planets men to be discount Cadians.
That said, your army won't be invalidated. So join the Guard! See the galaxy! Meet amazing new lifeforms and shoot them!

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

You could always start your army with miniatures that are going to be safe for a long time because they are somewhat newer kits/ some that have aged well. If you started off with scions, bullgryns and most of the tanks you are probably good for the foreseeable future. Also if newer nicer infantry come out you can always use old standard cadians as conscripts

My recommendation would be to start with Scions for your infantry. You can go all in on them, if you like, but they’d be a solid place to start as they’ll be useful into the foreseeable future and are fairly new kits. I think they’re boxes of 5... so buy 4 boxes to make 3 squads of 5 and a pair of Tempestor Primes with 3 bodies left over to maybe bulk your squads to 6 each. That’s a minimum battalion that you could slot into pretty much any Guard force, and will benefit from their (mostly useless) trait.
The Russ models are also relatively new, and a Supreme Command detachment of Tank Commanders has lots of gas.
After that? That would be the point you start “committing” to Infantry Squads. I like the Cadians, though I admit they’re showing their age. I’d suggest that 40 guys and a handful of characters is likely where I’d start. I find that Russes and Artillery pieces need an infantry squad each to babysit them, and fill space so deep strikers are held at bay.
I wouldn’t hold off, if you want to play them. My experience with 6th / 7th edition was that the rules change so fast that you’ll always be wondering what the next cool thing will be and you never wind up starting / finishing things. My Red-Marines are in a terrible state where I bought some basics (Tacs, Scouts, Dreads, Razorback/Rhinos, Termies) and made a few custom Characters but then... formations, rules changes, new models... it all got so overwhelming I stopped buying models altogether because “What if the next thing is better or invalidates what I bought?”.
So while nobody likes having an army that changes or sucks on the table, if you play long enough everyone gets a chance to shine and if you like the models you have, you’ll still enjoy playing with suboptimal choices. Guard are mostly mediocre for the last 15 years. They were solid in 5th, but MechVets is not my preferred style. Good at the start of 6th before TauDar started stomping them, and our codex got gutted for 7th during which Guard were awful. Now they’re top tier. So if you like the models, buy them and play with them. Nobody knows what the future holds, so dive in. Or work towards an army that avoids Infantry Squads. Scion forces *can* work in 8th, so you aren’t crippling yourself if you focus on them for your infantry. Command Tanks has BS 3+, so could represent Scion gunners if you have fluff concerns.

Don't delay! Join the Imperial Guard today!
But in all seriousness don't delay, the Imperial Guard are so low on the totem pole of new models that we probably won't get new infantry for at least 5 years. Also they wear Cadian pattern flak armor which is the standard for the Imperial Guard so they can be any regiment.
Worst case scenario you buy some infantry and paint them up, GW then releases new Cadians. Since they'll probably look pretty similar mix the old Cadians with the new Cadians and you'll have some variety in your infantry force.

A couple questions:
When you say you want an infantry regiment, do you mean that you want a pure infantry 2000 point army with no supporting vehicles assigned to them from other regiments?
Do you have any interest in human(ish) forces other than Imperial Guard? Things like Chaos Cultists/Traitor Guard or GSC Guard.
I ask because you could potentially re-purpose the Cadians to be something else if they release a new Infantry Squad kit that you like better.

3 years is a long time. Likely too long for even GW to predict, let alone us random forum posters.
At the rate they are releasing stuff, there is definitely a chance of new AM troopers by 2022. But its not a vacuum, many other things will be happening. Maybe 9E comes out and AM aren't as good anymore. Maybe they become further radicalized and start using Lunge Mines and Cherry Blossoms. Maybe "life happens" and you have to put aside your hobbies, or just don't care about 40K anymore.
I say if you like the current models, get them. If not, pick another faction whose models you do like.

Agreeing with some other posters here, get a regiment line from Victoria or Anvil Miniatures and don't worry about being outmoded by new models because your dudes will look better than even the best made Cadians GW can come up with.

I don't know about that, I think the Leman Russ looks VERY dated, and IG players also tend to have a lot of dated-looking metal Commisars because there's no improved alternative in plastic. Nah, they're on repackaged 1.5 versions and all they got were new gun options. The hull itself and the turret is what needs more detail, and it also looks derpy due to height-to-width ratio.
