I am a competitive ITC player so trying to keep up on things is kind of important. But recently the rules have been absolutely STREWN EVERYWHERE. They come in the box set or they come in White Dwarf or they come in Chapter Approved or they come with the model or it's in Vigilus Defiant... Holy hell. It's like a shotgun going off at long range.

I am wondering if there is any centralized hub for all this disparate rules. I'm not going to buy them all but i need to know them all. I am sure I'm not alone in wondering how GW plans to bring it all together again. the alternative is to have a bunch of "Gotcha!" moments at tournaments. That's not only not fun, but it defies everything i know about good sportsmanship.

Anywho, just wondering what peoples solutions are.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that if you want to know literally ALL the rules, you have to buy literally all the rules sources.

A lot is available for free. The FAQs, Errata, Designer's Commentary, Stepping into a New Edition, and the Shadowspear stuff is all free. Likewise, if you have the digital Chaos codex, it's updating with all the new rules, including things like Blackstone Fortress minis and Haarken Worldclaimer, for free.

So... yeah. Free is the norm, but if you want the rules that aren't free, you'll have to buy them. That's... just kinda the way companies make money.

Well, if GW is to be believed here, you get it...in Codex CSM 2.0. Which is a free update if you own the digital edition. It just adds right in to what you already own.
Do you mean LITERALLY ALL THE SUPPLEMENTAL CONTENT? no, there's not a big book. If you're complaining about this new vigilus book thing, though...there's your answer.

I have never purchased a digital codex (EDIT: I did buy the Sisters of Battle one since it was the only one you could get), and perhaps you assumed everyone has. I was literally unaware that any of that information was regularly updated in them. So that is useful information I can use, thank you. I don't prefer having to access them that way but it sounds like it will be helpful for Chaos. I know just the guy to talk to about that.

What about Assassins? The Kroot Rider? Where are those updated digitally?

I have a lot going on in my hobby and real life and the sudden shotgun effect is causing me new issues.

Hello Jancoran,

Here is the answer you want.

For the most part, FAQs and other documents related to general rules and faction specific can be found on the Warhammer Community site.
New Detachments are found in campaign books, we have two right now. You can only find them there.
Faction rules are of course in that factions codex.
Some rules for less well known space marine chapters, assassins, etc are in WD.
Some rules are actually released with black library books.

I hope this helps.

Somewhere in Canada

I used to have a regular group of about six. Most of as played at least 2 factions; some of us as many as five.

We pooled and shared our books during the down time between games. Some of us took notes, some of us just researched the key facts we wanted to learn, and trusted memory from that point forward.

I get it. It's true; there are a lot of sources of rules.Complaints are legit and I empathize.

However, the assertion that you need to read and have immediate and continuous access to every rule that exists in order to play the game is a bit hyperbolic.

Most people have the rules, the most recent chapter approved and the codices for any armies that they might be inclined to play. Most people then download the FAQ for each of the books they own.

If they like campaign play, and if they had an interest playing the campaign through, they'd buy the campaign books. Otherwise they'd borrow a copy from a friend over the weekend or get to the store an hour earlier on game night and peruse the store copy and try out a few of your favourite strategems or wargear or missions, or whatever,

People here have advocated for a paid monthly subscription service that gives access to all of the most up to date rules in an indexed, searchable format. Great idea for a service- I'm just worried that such a tool would replace paper books.

I really like finding story hooks for narrative play in the fluff, which is always valuable, even when the edition changes. I love having rules and artwork and fluff for characters that are currently out of print. Eliminating paper books would be a heartbreaker for me.

If you don't have the digital books this can be a huge task. Like if you wanted to play Crimson Fists, in order to have ALL the information needed to play any and all units for them (including FW) with all the updates, you'd need something like 20 books, magazines, indexes, and FAQs.

BattleScribe doesn't have stratagems etc.

Buying rules is business, but like the OP I do wonder where the WD rules will end up. It could be CA, but after a year there may be too much content, and CA itself goes OOP a year later too.

Back in my RT days, the WD rules were eventually consolidated into the Compendium and Compilation rulebooks that remained available until 2nd edition landed. Of course between WD being published and those books being produced there were periods where you couldn't get those rules through GW at all, just like now.

I guess if you want to be the top ITC player and know every rule for every faction you need to buy a few things;

1. Codexes for each faction.
2. WDs this year for supplements.
3. Campaign books such as Vigilus Defiant and Ablaze.
4. The main rulebook.
5. Chapter Approved.
6. Very few models have releases with rules included - Primarneus is an example. You can buy the model or find his rules using a quick google search.

Other resources are free -

1. FAQs for codexes.
2. Updates for codexes.
3. The big FAQ.

Really you want to memorize all this stuff? Even if you have access to it you want to spend all that time on making the game a memory test?

Ask your opponent. Ask specifically what you need to know. When pre-measuring your deployment position ask them if they have any re-deploy special rules or special rules to increase their movement or shooting ranges. If you are running a mechanised list ask what each weapon you see does and ask if they have ways to increase the strength of their weapons.

The person standing the other side of the table should know all the relevant rules for the models they took and this is not a game of hidden information, to fail to answer a question honestly about your rules is unsporting behaviour worthy of getting a judge involved. They do not need to volunteer every little thing, you need to ask.

Have an exalt - if you want all the rules "because I'm a competitive ITC player", buy the damn books. Don't expect to get the material for free - that would be piracy, which is wrong.

There is a valid question regarding the future of WD content, though - maybe a question for someone to ask in a studio seminar at some stage?

Were the rules for Marneus v4 not in the first Vigilus book?

On the other hand, I'm not aware of the rules for Eisenhorn, Marbo and/or Severine Raine being fully available outside of their boxes - I was expecting Eisenhorn's rules, at least, to get a reprint in CA18.

It wouldn't kill GW to at least produce an index of where all of the various material is located.

How many people will be able to tell you which issue of White Dwarf had the Crimson Fists rules in six months time? Which special edition would you have needed for the Emperor's Spears rules? Which boxes of models have rules in them, and which of those can actually be used in matched play? Did the Conquest-specific Leitenant have his own rules? Etc. Etc...

I see GW sell all this year's WD back-issues:

Is that new for this year because they've started publishing rules in them?

They usually stock recent back issues for a little while, but when they're gone they're gone.

Now that there is no digital edition, I don't imagine they're going to be keen on keeping dozens of old physical issues in stock forever.

It wouldn't kill GW to at least produce an index of where all of the various material is located.
How many people will be able to tell you which issue of White Dwarf had the Crimson Fists rules in six months time?

I see GW sell all this year's WD back-issues:

Is that new for this year because they've started publishing rules in them?

They've always done that (at least while online ordering has been a thing, anyway). It's just good business practice to sell off old stock. Once they're gone they're gone, though as no more will be printed. Ironically, the issues with useable rules in them, such as the assassins Codex, will likely be the most popular and therefore hardest to get.

I guess they'll have to make them free PDFs eventually then like Index: Renegade Knights (even if they do put them in CA).

Yeah, this whole topic (and a busier family life) are the 1-2 punch that has killed my desire to play competitive tourneys this edition. It is just too much to keep up with.
Casual play has never been better, however, IMO
