In the current meta, would there be a good place for Deathwatch Veterans with Heavy Bolters?  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Just curious if they could really bring anything to a Deathwatch army. I know Heavy Bolters may not be the best heavy weapon in the game right now, but I have the pieces of plastic to put together 5 (maybe 6) of them. So, I was curious if they may be worthwhile in my Deathwatch army.

Thanks

I find Deathwatch Veterans are better at close-quarters firefights than stand-off killing, and in that role a storm bolter is usually better, cheaper, and lets you take a storm shield. In the stand-off role if you're very worried about the extra 6" of range a Stalker boltgun is still cheaper and allows you to have a storm shield. Usually the bump to S5 is offset by access to Hellfire rounds, and while the Hellfire Shell stratagem is an option that exists I find it isn't hugely relevant in Deathwatch given access to the Tempest Shells stratagem and the lack of the Signum/Cherub combo.

Short answer: No.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

a possible option

a squad with 5 stalker bolt guns and 1 heavy bolter.. can use the hellfire shell stratagem to crank out a few mortal wounds here and there (if you got the command points to spare)

however, i personaly dont use heavy bolters,

Frag Cannons is the only way to go

DW get less use out of HB's than even regular SMs. When a Storm Bolter costs 4 points and, when standing still, can get 4 shots at 30" the need for a HB is much reduced. Stalker Bolters are probably better for long-range squads, though I have to admit I've never felt the need for those sort of units in a DW army when Intercessors can stand still and fire twice out to 36" if needed.

So that's a no from me too.

As stated above, 1 HB in your entire list just for the Hellfire Shell Strat.
Everything else should be SBs and Frag cannons

I mean statistically heavy B's are the perfect weapon for 8th. Wounds t8 on 5 infantry on 3 and -1 takes away armour but isn't wasted due to invul saves. Your happy at shooting everything with a big B. There actually probably the best weapon in the game right now. That being said I don't think vets hold them well and waste their special ammo rule
