Hey Dakka,
I've undertaken a difficult task, and hoping to get some input.
It started out with a plan to make a Catachan squad modelled after Serious Sam. Then I changed that idea to killteam, and decided to expand my list of characters.
I gotta say, I'm running dry after about 7 models plus 4/5 ideas brewing.
Ive attached a picture of the 7. So you get an idea where I'm going, listed in no particular order:
Serious Sam
Rex Power Colt(far cry 3 blood dragon)
Conan the barbarian
BJ blazkowicz(Wolfenstein)
Hulk Hogan
Uncle Sam
Ash Williams (evil dead)
I've got a couple more ideas, but if it wasn't obvious from Hulk Hogan, I'm reaching for ideas. Probably most won't be that recognizable either, given the imprecise nature of conversions and a reliance on knowing the original IP.
Does Dakka have more ideas I could reasonably model? Preferably with special weapons, bonus points if I can pass him off as having a vox.
Alternatively, the other picture (assuming they went up, tried uploading from my phone) is just a dang cool kit bash I found (scion helmet, freeguild armour torso). Do you think it inappropriate to mix a cool conversion with the concept I'm running on? I'd love to faithfully follow the concept to the end, but I'm really scraping the barrel. I'm not even heavy into some of the IPs I'm borrowing from.

Nice roster. Serious Sam was my childhood and Wolfenstein New Order is one of the best shooters out there. This makes me want to make a kill team of Nod soldiers from C&C led by Joseph Seed (Who would be Kane's right hand man)

Also, with such a crazy Killteam, the freguild scion dude might as well join up. He can be like the guy with no powers in Deadpool's team from Deadpool 2. The odd one out. Hes in the gang because Serious Sam is like "You look like you know how to chew ass."
Edit: I was thinking of Duke Nukem with that quote

If you use commanders, you can make a Commander Shepard (Mass Effect) as your company commander.
Terminator is quite obvious.
Hulk could be used as an Ogryn, if you plan on using the Elites expansion.
Hawkeye (Marvel) as a sniper specialist
Hawkeye (MASH 4077) as a medic specialist

Hawky recommends Hawkeye and Hawkeye. Love it.
I briefly considered Radar from mash as comms guy. I'd have to scale the model shorter, but it was the glasses that pose the worst challenge. Some of the Nod concept art is crazy good. Throw some Tiberium crystals down to base and it'll be sick!
Kill team has got to be the best move GW did for crazy concept armies.
I'm feeling a little less opposed to including a few cool looking models with no tie to any IP. I think as long as it isn't an overwhelming amount of uniformity the concept would still translate well, particularly because some of these characters even from IP's are less known or minimally identifiable.

Glasses can be made with a bit of patience and skill.
I used a toothpick to determine the size, thin electrical wire and a drop of superglue.

Nice glasses there - consider them looted!
What about John Matrix from Commando? Lots of equipment, grenades etc.
Waverley from Man from U.N.C.L.E? Communications.
Ripley from Alien? Anything from unarmed to power loader.
Robocop? Cyborg.
Any of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters, really.
Or, you could look at the Last Chancers miniatures?

And of course, don't forget Team Fortress 2 characters!
Sniper (Sniper Rifle?)
Medic
Scout (Shotgun, if possible)
Pyro (Flamer)
Demoman (Grenade Launcher)
Heavy (Hotshot Volleygun or Ogryn)
Spy, Soldier or Engineers are unfortunately not that easy to use.
