The first preview is up in bootleg fashion from the Celebration convention going on right now. When the official video is uploaded then I'll update the post with it. This is the first time in years since the first trailer for Rogue One went up (the one with all the scenes that DIDN'T appear in the final version including the ending) that I'm actually a little bit excited for the IP.

Edit: I'd expect that the trailer is somewhere in this hour+ long panel from the con but I don't have the opportunity to watch the whole thing at the moment. Link spoilered below.

I am pretty excited for this, much moreso than the main trilogy. Seems like a good cast, I get the good ol star wars vibes from this unlike some of the other stuff Disney has put out.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

It's not in the panel video, they cut the livestream while they show the footage. Which is just, pointless, as usual, since the crap quality phone vids go up pretty much immediately.

At least we seem to be beyond the days of mindlessly vacuous, egotistical ‘reaction’ videos clogging up youtube, making the actual trailer you’re looking for very difficult to find.

Gods I hate those, and the cretins that post them. Ever so carefully stage rehearsed, it makes you wonder how many takes it took them.

Eurgh.

I think they're still there, they're just marginally less promoted by the Almighty Algorithm.

Watching the panel now, it's a bit pandery, lots of "oh em gee we sure do love our fans" and "I have been a fan of the Star Tre..wars since I was an ickle babby for realsies!" guff from the actors, but that's SOP these days for marketing events, especially when in damage control mode. The actual info is a bit sparse, but it looks interesting, and it's pretty cool that the 501st get to make a proper on-screen appearance, I love that they didn't tell them what it was for, they just showed up expecting an event or something and oh hello it's Jon Favreau and lots of cameras

OK, the ship is cool, that's me sold.

I suspect they count on it happening as vital marketing despite what they publicly say. The same content is then worth at least three clicks/views/impressions... One for the bootleg, on for the panel missing the footage, and one for the official upload(s).

Ever since I read the Republic Commando books as a teenager, I loved the mandalorian style. Sadly, these books are not canon anymore due to the clone wars TV series, but still.

Also, I am kind of surprised that it took them so long to make something revolving around a Boba Fett-style character. Looks pretty cool, I just hope it will be a more gritty approach.

Looks decent. I can get fairly down on Disney's SW tenure sometimes, but then I remind myself that Rogue One and Rebels exist and that the potential is always there for a success, especially if Filoni is involved.

I'm not big on Mando-love ever since Karen Traviss went way too far with her 'third edge of the blade' crap, and the NJO books had them all flying around in indestructable fighters, but something a little more in keeping with the original Fett character and the various Mandalorian appearances in the cartoons might just work,

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Packed a lot of 'remember this?' references into a few short minutes on the phone clip. Hope its something they get out of the way early.

Could be good, could be bad. I'd like to see the guy outside the armor, as riding the 'too-cool-for-school' armor set for the entire run is going to get really old. Can the guy act beyond one-liners and complete security from reaction shots?

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Seems they’re leaning more on the TV stuff for a while, and taking a break from the movies.

Can’t say that’s necessarily a bad move. The tv series offer more scope for story telling, and they can build plot hooks into them. Consider that once, all we knew of the Clone Wars was contained in Leia’s message, and how fleshed out that all became.

Mentions here and there, see what tickles the public’s fancy, go from there?

It's a bizarre line to take compared with the MCU. It just speaks to Kathleen's complete mismanagement of the franchise. I appreciate they might be taking a few years to get some films planned out and perhaps a larger arc going.

This looks interesting though. I always wanted a Fett film as a Western and this looks like this is as close as I'm going to get.

The MCU and SW lines are run by separate companies. Disney is not marvel and it is not lucasfilm. Yes, it OWNS both of them, but it does not "run" them as such.

Disney lets them both run themselves for the most part.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I doubt that very much, the "hiatus" for the films and shift to TV focus has Bob Iger's fingerprints all over it.

Disney buys companies and lets them pretty much run themselves so long as they perform to Disney's expectations, and Lucasfilm stopped doing that.

On the plus side, since Kennedy is supposedly a great producer in the sense of "enabling an actually-creative person to do their thing without interfering", that means Filoni is now functionally the Feige of Star Wars, which is what they've needed from day one - someone with an appreciation for the source material, and a vision strong enough to provide direction to other creatives who come on board but flexible enough to accommodate changing circumstances and new ideas. It's just a shame that if & when Filony & Co build up enough goodwill and buzz for the franchise to go back to the big screen, it will likely be taken out of his hands and given back to Kennedy, who we can only hope has learned her lesson.

The point was that it's ridiculous to claim there's some how fatigue for a beloved franchise after 4 films, while the MCU churns out 2 to 3 a year.

Is it fatigue though?

TLJ and Solo are both perfectly fine films. Still leagues ahead of much Sci-Fi out there.

Solo? Wasn't really promoted all that much, and was easily the most disposable entry in the series. Rogue One? That heist sounded interesting, and indeed it was (that space battle? Magnifique!). Solo? Well, we already know Solo is a rogue with a heart of gold. The film is good, but not compulsory viewing to appreciate the rest of the series.

I agree about Solo, it was "unnecessary", but I've been consuming "unnecessary" Star Wars content for twenty plus years, the fact it didn't tie directly into some big saga-esque plot and didn't really do much with the characters beyond have them go on a cool adventure doesn't matter to me, since they went on a cool adventure.

The thing is, charitably speaking, quite a few people don't really agree about TLJ. It split the fandom pretty thoroughly(not just the superfans either), and that wasn't helped by the attempts to drag or push that dissatisfaction to either end of the culture war nonsense, but perhaps more importantly it seems to have disproportionately turned off the people who buy stuff. Even Solo, an "unnecessary" movie that went well over budget, struggled with normie audiences as a result of all the "troubled production" rumours and the barely-extant marketing, and also with that part of the fandom who disliked TLJ(whether that's the minority who wanted to "send a message", as if Disney care, or the rest who just didn't have the enthusiasm any more), wasn't a *huge* bomb - if you put Star Wars on screen sufficient bums will occupy seats to make your money back even in less than ideal circumstances. But Disney don't want to break even, they want an annual cultural and box office juggernaut that lives up to its reputation as the franchise that pretty much launched the idea of merchandising a movie franchise.

The "fatigue" nonsense comes from two sources; commentators who want it to be true, ie the folk who don't particularly care for genre fare and need to continue believing that any moment the public will wake up from their sci-fi and superhero-induced stupefaction and start appreciating pretentious Oscar-bait, and commentators who need it to be true, ie the aforementioned culture warriors who can only conceive of disaffected fans as being motivated by some deep-seated bigotry and so need an alternative narrative when there are simply too many such people for that notion to be plausible.

People aren't sick of Star Wars, some of them are just sick of what they perceive as bad Star Wars. The solution there would seem to be obvious, and though I didn't expect they'd do it on the small screen, I am happy the franchise is back in the hands of people who evidently cherish it for what it is, rather than what they wish it would be instead.

Peeps also compare it to the MCU.

The MCU is a very different beast. It's wide variety of characters and settings comfortably allows for 2-3 movies each year - and it doesn't really require any of them to be a big crossover. We're just spoiled in that respect

Star Wars? For the first 19 years of my life, I only had 5 films, including the two Ewok ones (which I have a soft spot for, bobbins as they are). By my mid-20's, that was 8 movies.

But it's all essentially a single narrative (barring the Ewok movies). And that can't really sustain the Marvel Model of at least one every year. It's not what the fanbase is used to, and dare I say it, isn't what the wider public really want.

The TV series at least offer us something we're more accepting of as a wider audience. Decent budget, bingeable sci-fi drama. A potential fill for the void that Game of Thrones is about to leave in my life, and the life of others.
