With the new Codex around the corner, i'm looking for some advice on what to get to start the army with...

3x start collecting box + more battle line?
then make one of each leader riding the magmadroth?

Hearthguard units?

All advice apreciated

How strong do you want it to be?

Imagine three people with the same set of values but radically different emotional states, each of them believes their position is more valid than the other two, they all post using the same account, and your job is to make it coherent.

I mostly play with friends, but I will be taking part in local tournaments with the army..

Looking at the new Battletome, there seems to be a few changes that may change the army composition.

Hearthguard berzerkers are the go-to 'op unit' of the book so if you are looking to tournaments I would recommend stocking up on them. Two start collecting boxes would be good, as that will give you access to two 'droths (assemble one as a runefather on droth & runesmiter on foot, one as whatever you like) as well as some vulkite units that make for good battleline when you aren't going all-out and make for a cheap means of filling slots even when you are.
