So I'm playing a fair amount of kill team, and simultaneously building out a craftworld army. In a previous life, I collected space marines.

One thing I noticed about space marines is that there is a plethora of cool bits in the boxes that you can use to customize each marine to make them unique.

I have found no such bits in the eldar kits. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about customizing the eldar? They seem very static - each fire dragon, guardian, whatever is more or less a clone of the others with minimal difference in posture.

In particular, I'd love to figure out how to customize an eldar kill team, but have no ideas on how to make a guardian look like a coms specialist, or a Dire Avengers exarch look grizzled (ie a veteran). Obviously this query is equally applicable to 40k to add uniqueness to the individual troops and even leaders.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Some of the older metal support platform crew with some work can serve as a "comms specialist".
One has a large vambrace mounted terminal of some sort (reminiscent of an old RT space marine "comms officer").

You will have to cut and create sockets for alternate arms/heads to fit into, though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Sadly, this is far too common with Eldar, the models are super old at this point and need to be updated. Sadly that's unlikely since SoB are taking up a ton of design assets from GW and they only update or make new units to tie into new codex releases and Eldar got theirs already.

Welcome to not marines.

The closest you get to customization is Dire Avengers Exarch bits. Aside from that, there are some different guardian bits like old bike and vyper helmets, some in artillery support platforms, resin upgrade for assault guardians and some bits from aspects (Banshee mirrorswords).

There are also corsairs, dark eldar kits, and some elf kits from FB and 3d party alternatives.

It's a shame you can't pick up corsair kits from Forgeworld, they were really nice to add some cool variations to squads, especially the heavy weapons.

Dark Eldar are a good base for bits, provided you shave off the spikes and round them a bit so they blend a bit better. Eldar bits are hard to come by naturally, and as mentioned above, you get the odd spare arm with aspect kits and that's it.

I’m creating a couple of Corsair squads, swapping out heads for wood elf archers, fiddling with poses, adding off cuts from other conversion projects (NEVER throw anything away) and adding some Drukhari weaponry and those awesome faceless helmets.
I’m also lucky enough to have a box of old school guardians which came with a range of weapons (woefully short on shurikens though)

Keep an eye open on eBay for stuff I’m using this guy as a coma specialist:

This is my killteam (very much a work in progress) using mostly *very* old models the DA exarch is actually a Fire Dragon exarch body with new arms and head, the scout is from Blackstone Fortress (thanks eBay)

I was thinking- if you wanted a slightly different look for the storm guardian gunners, you could hack the heads off fire dragons- they’re easy to come by on eBay.

This might help: Standard Bearer

Thanks Tikay Fortooun, and why aren't you at your post?

I have some of the older eldar (space elf) minis in a box somewhere, as well as some of hte original harlequins. Yay being old and having stuff from the 80s. The problem I've discovered is that the scale differences are noticeable, as well as the, uhm, quality of miniatures.

I may end up learning to play with greenstuff and try to figure out how to make custom molds and bits...

The guardians with heavy weapons platform sprues have some bitz you can add for customisation. Not a whole lot, but definitely some options
