I only play with painted miniatures, because if they deign to fight for me, the least that I can do is paint them
While I can understand the terror of "loss of control with wash" intellectually, my heart can not really feel it

The threat of a bad dice roll on the other hand ...
Yeah, I only play with painted miniatures too. About half of my enjoyment of miniatures war gaming comes from two painted forces and a decently decorated table/board. I spent all week painting up the Primaris from First Strike because I think I want to play them in Kill Team this weekend. I just finished them today.
I was only mentioning the wash thing relation to how contrast paints work. It took me a lot long a log time to get comfortable with using the black magic of washes because once I put the wash on I never quite knew where it would pool. I have gotten better with experience and now treat the wash phase as a subtractive process. I see contrast paints as having the same requiring a bit of experience to know where the colors are going to be. When it comes to my painting, I try to leave as little to the unknown as possible. Oddly enough, on the table I have little issue leaving everything to chance.
