Where is a good place to read up on the World Eaters legion and their practices just preheresy?
I've got a homebrew character I'd like to flesh out the story on. I've used this guy forever, my idea is that he was a Terran born World Eater who didn't go in for the psycho surgeries. He commanded a tactical company and did the thankless tasks holding ground and covering for the assaults

You could start with the Lexicanum article which captures a fair bit of the varied articles and books (index astartes through to Collected Visions, Forge World books etc)
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/World_Eaters

If money is no object you also have the Horus Heresy Betrayal book which details a lot about the legion and their methods of war (it's not very complicated - successive waves of drop-pod assault at the core of the enemies strength. Normally all of the background about them involves the phrase "leaving a ramp of their own dead to get to enemy x" )

There was a point where supposedly all of the astartes had had the psycho surgery after Angron commanded the Legion. But, 150,000 marines spread across the galaxy, for something that was supposedly life threatening and difficult in terms of the operation, just doing the basic arithmetic you have to think that gives some leeway for marines that didn't ever get it by the time the Heresy broke out. And from several accounts there were still Terran members of the legion that were about.

Sounds like Endryd Haar, so try the Blackshields audiobooks.

It does sound dissapointingly like Haar now that I looked him up. Irritating since I've used this character in one form or another since 2nd ed and now it looks like I got my ideas from them. Maybe I'll get a lawyer, somebody stole my mojo.

Very possible someone read your idea and copied it - I'm sure that's probably not the first time that's happened!

I did have a battle-rep at a 'semi-official' Great Crusade weekend (some of the background had been written by Graham McNeil) with World Eaters against Space Wolves, as well as mention of one of the lost legions ( ). It was posted on my blog and a couple of forums at the time. This is going back about 10 years, so in the early days of the novel series and while the pre-heresy hobby at that time was all convertions and custom-built kits, so quite embryonic and much smaller than it is these days.

http://eatersofworlds.blogspot.com/2009/11/gedren-battle-report-final-battle.html

Then there was a battle written into Aaron Dembski Bowden's Betrayer novel - Space Wolves against World Eaters, as the Great Crusade-era 'marine on marine' fight and with a similar kind of ending (although opposite result).

I'm not saying our games and write-up was the inspiration there, but you never know!

It's doubtful, I know the then line developer at the time of Battletech once told me that they are basicly forbidden from reading fan fiction etc to purposefully avoid that stuff.I imagine 40k is similer the writers are very careful what sections of the fan forums etc they read

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

There are no original concepts

There's, like, eight stories to tell.

Волшебная Сказка | Volshebnaya Skazka | A Fairy Tale (updated 29/12/19, ep10 - And All That Could Have Been)
Kabal of The Violet Heart (updated 02/02/2020)

All 'crimes' should be treasured if they bring you pleasure somehow.

THIS.

Literary theory will confirm there's no such thing as an original idea, only an original way to present it.

The Angron novel slave of nuceria has large pieces of story involving the legion before the implantation of the nails. Betrayer features memories of a dreadnought harking back to the warhound days.

Thought that was an extremely cool part of that story!

Also the padding out of Angron as a character (think ADB did quite a lot to make something that was extremely two-dimensional previously, and into a character).
