Some counter points

They're genetically driven to fight, yes. They're also an inherently migratory species. You can't afford to simply leave them to it, because sooner or later, the constant fighting will see a Big Mek with the resources to build a Kroozer. Or the spirit of the Waaagh will kick in, and they'll feel compelled to find someone else to beat up.

And Orks very much can bash together a starship. It's what they do. Heck, half the time a Mek is just building something - and won't know what it is until it's finished.

Orks are self sufficient species. When they arrive on a planet, it's 'orkiformed' as their spores start producing Squigs. And from Squigs, all things are derived. Food, fuel, ammo, beer, weapons. All sorts.

Any offensive mounted is overwhelming. You're talking hundreds if not thousands of Boyz who's only wish is to get into a fight with the enemy. They're resilient, and they're motivated. They literally live for battle, and proving how 'ard they are.

The Orks are nutters, with a unique society. Wherever they go, they thrive. They do stuff instinctually. Their politics is wonderfully simple. If you can clobber them, you can boss them around. If not, they're the Boss. That's a pretty major strength, as every Orkoid (including Grots and Snots) just accept that's the way things are, and crack on with their short, terror filled, miserable lives.

Bold of you to post this on a site called Dakka Dakka

I think it's a nice change of pace when you consider the complex motivations of the various WH40k species. All they want to do is fight, which fits perfectly in a universe where there is only war.

That seems like a rather dismissive attitude torwards a well written out argument.
Also you completely missinterpret ork culture to the point you belive that A: they would wipe themselves out (which is disctinctly and absolutely untrue if you WOULD consider how orkoids populate a planet, and B: The Orks as a society might be slapstick brutal murderhobos migrating through the galaxy for the shere fun of burning, pillaging and most importantly fighting but you forgot how they actually came to be, as a Genetically enginerred weapon to be used against the crons, which got out of controll badly.

For them this seems like fun time and humorus hilarity is their view on the galaxy overall, for other races though, orks are a terror. Planet got spored, well good luck of getting rid of them. Left alone to long, Oh you now have a Waaaaagh heading in your direction. Durability above and beyond even on the most rank and file soldier orkz have?

If you contrast it that way, they very much fit into 40k. Infact they are about the only Species happy with the circumstances because their culture thrives on these circumstances.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

You're right Mr. Not - also apologies to Grotsnik - I did not mean to appear dismissive.

Can I repeat that the descriptions you are putting forth I find completely unconvincing in a 40k setting due to the points made in the original post?

We can do "Oh no they couldn't build a spaceship" - "Oh yes they could" all day long, because that's a matter of opinion.

Perhaps this one should be locked. I did not wish to stir up bad feelings.

Hawke Out.

But they can. That's the background.

If we stop and look at all of 40k, and what is/isn't/should/shouldn't work/happen? It all falls apart.

And how else to play Orks? They're a race of Hooligans, united in a single way of life, and a single creed. Fightin' is fun, Biggest Is Boss.

They don't really appreciate the concept of a peaceful species, or civilians. Because that's just nothing like their own culture. They don't consider civilians of other cultures cowardly - just sensible enough to not fight someone bigger. They may hold them in contempt for not trying, but it's not put down to cowardice.

Orks is grate!
