White Dwarf 2019 Goes Digital!

From the 15th June, you’ll be able to pre-order shiny, new digital copies of White Dwarf. In addition to June’s issue, you’ll be able to get the issues from January 2019 to May 2019 as well. So if you like to read your favourite monthly magazine on your phone or tablet, you’re in for a treat!

This is a fantastic opportunity to catch up on any of the exclusive rules that you may have missed from previous issues, such as Assassins, Crimson Fists and more. There’ll be digital editions of each issue moving forwards too!

'It is a source of constant consternation that my opponents
cannot correlate their innate inferiority with their inevitable
defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

I think the ability to get back issues is a good idea, but as for buying the digital copy over the paper version? I don't think so.

It's GW, so it's going to be digital copies for the same price as print. :-/

Are you new to digital content? That's how it is everywhere, for everything. It is hardly a GW thing.

This is getting annoying now. I used to buy the digital version but when they stopped it, I took out a subscription for the paper version. Now the digital is back ... but for how long?

I much prefer the digital because it’s so easy to keep rules etc, by screen shutting them and turning them into a pdf.

I like WD being an "impulse buy", so I'll stick with print.
But it's nice for those inclined for digital stuff.

Good. I don't have room in my house for the paper versions nowadays. It was baffling that they dropped it in the first place.

Demonstrably false in many spheres of life.
A casual stroll through the Inidgo website for Best Sellers shows ebooks 10 to 15% less than physical.
Random books from lesser known authors are under $2 compared to $8 to $12 for the physical book.

D&D books are something like half price in digital format.

Video games are tough to gauge because so few games have physical copies but I'm I've gotten a fair share of digital games via xobox live cheaper than new in store physical.

So no, digital being the exact same price as physical is not the norm or even common.

Sceptical.
They had massive technical problems the last time.

As an example:
I ordered a print and digital subscription.
Found out that you could download back issues for free, then did so - but once I reached 12 (?) issues in total my digital subscription stopped... Eventually it started working again, after around six months of contact with support and several updates.

In my experience its typical and normal of most major publishers/authors/product lines. In fact because of the way tax is applied in some countries the ebooks can sometimes wind up (after a while) more than the paperbacks (at least in the UK where Ebooks are taxed in a different tax bracket and at a higher rate than books).

So for GW charging the same or very near to it that would be pretty much expected.

Now you do reference smaller named authors and indie compaines, but this is a different kettle of fish. Often they are running many things close to or even at a loss because its a hobby for them; supplemental income; becaues they feel that by undercutting they've more chance to get noticed, read, and thus they can make profits back later. Heck it might just reflect that they only wrote it in their spare time and don't have an editor, publisher, advertising etc... all to pay for; nor even have to consider making minimum wage on their time spent writing etc..

Sure bigger companies can reach bigger markets and thus can bring prices down; but at the same time they can have much bigger overheads to consider and more involved process as well as staff/workers who require more than minimum wage to work for them.

I'd only expect GW to charge significantly less if they were doing a push to do away with the print edition and wanted to make it more attractive to take up the digital.

So how do they give you the promo figures that sometimes get packaged with the WD? Or are those print premium items?

Cool, I liked having the digital version. It allowed me to feth off at work on slow days and I could just lie about how I'm texting one of my distributor reps.

Still prefer the print version though.

I'm talking about how virtually every genre in every sphere of life from major retailers to indie developers, the digital copy will cost some % less than a physical copy if only to cover the cost of printing and distribution.

If you say that the UK has some convoluted draconian tax (because of course it does) that causes companies everywhere to charge the same amount for a physical product that you can hold and touch and resell as they do for a PDF then ok. Just understand that the rest of the world - that isn't living in a dystopian joke state - will raise an eyebrow or two at ludicrous things like this.

I’d just like to point out that GW do charge significantly less for digital rule books and codexes than they so for physical ones. It just doesn’t seem to be the case for White Dwarf though. Whether that’s normal for magazines as opposed to books, I don’t know.

I hate digital "magazines" and would not buy one, but I know plenty of people love reading stuff on their phones...so it's a smart decision.

I liked the digital version. I still buy the physical edition but having access to the painting guides on digital was useful. Much easier to have my tablet propped up on my desk when painting than to have the physical edition.

OH... This is a major sore spot for me.

I was a subscriber to WD Digital the first time around. NO fething WAY will I buy into that bs again. I already fell for that bs once.

After they decided to gak-can the product, access was terminated. Which meant, it didn't matter if you paid for it, your gak is gone; gone for good, because the content was removed and couldn't be downloaded. I lost 2 years worth of WD. feth you GW!

To anyone interested in this new evil endeavor, don't think for a second that the above scenario will not repeat itself. GW WILL kill it again and when they do you WILL loose your stuff. That's problem no.1 with digital product.

GW had their own iOS App that you had to download and then purchase the WD inside the App. So it was, I'm assuming some proprietary format. At the very least it's impossible to get the individual files.

When GW switched to the WD Weekly + Warhammer Visions format they removed WD from the App and only offered Warhammer Visions in the App. Subsequently when GW killed WD Weekly and Warhammer Visions to go back to the monthly WD format, GW killed the iOS App, removed it from the App Store and removed the WD downloadable content from the hosting server.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, I also purchased a large amount of GW's painting guides in iBooks. These too are no longer available. They have been removed from both the Book Store and the hosting server. So if my iPad that has these on it ever dies... They're gone forever too.

I have been burnt too badly by the shortcomings of digital content that will NEVER buy digital content again and quite loudly denounce it every opportunity I get.

Given your posted experience, I can't say I blame you. It sounds like the worst possible outcome long-term from a consumer perspective.

Again, these are books not magazines. GW’s digital books are also cheaper than print copies.

My digital subscription (I went for the dual-mode) never properly worked (across multiple devices), nor did their "fixes" so it was a giant waste of money for product paid for and never properly supplied.

In the end, I *cough* "found" superior digital copies online (not needing their gakky app, readable on phone, tablet, PC) to compliment my physical copies and cover the product that I paid for and they didn't get working for me. I won't be throwing my money away on this again after my poor experience last time.

Quite why anyone would trust GW with this a second time is beyond me. At least the BL ebooks are in an open format, having issues only available within a proprietary app where GW have a proven history of cutting access is just asking for trouble.

Heh - people don't seem to care greatly when White Dwarf lies about upcoming content which then never materializes; when they publish articles which are just gibberish masquerading as quality; when they reuse old content wholesale, and neglect to mention that it's a copy; when they literally insult the magazine's past content and creators...
