I'm looking to upgrade some old chaos knights onto new bases. The GW store says the new version uses 42x75mm bases. I was looking at using some resin bases, but they are only 40x75mm bases. Is a 2mm difference a big deal? Or could I get away using them?

Yeah, but couldn't it technically be considered cheating?

Only to the most WAACish of jerks.

YES, technically you ARE cheating. But only technically.

To anyone else it's negligible.

Seeing you could still use the 25mmx50mm square bases without cheating...no.

For Age of Sigmar, I presume? The 42x75s are oval, yes?

As I understand it, AoS ignores the bases and measures everything from the miniature itself. The bases have no game effect beyond ensuring the miniature stands up correctly.

So no, you're not cheating at all.

The game measures things in inch to half inch distances, so a 2mm difference in base size is not going to have any real world effect on your game. You can't even measure models all that perfectly with a ruler held above their head anyway so it a level of accuracy which is beyond what the practical world world playing of the game would entail.

Chances are no one would even notice unless you specifically point it out to them, even then its hardly any distance at all.

For a lot of things there are pros and cons to base size. And they generally end up being a wash. Corner cases where they are unbalanced exist, but for the most part nobody is going to care. Obviously, check with the people you are actually playing with and any TOs for events you are planning on going to. But I’d be shocked if anyone had an issue.

And even if they do care, 2mm difference is so slight as to be undetectable. I think the +/- on how I measure with a tape hovering over the model most of the time is going to have more variance then that.

As others has said, the difference is SOOOOOO small no one would either notice or care.

Heck, in my local area, no one even cares about my Eldar Jetbikes that I've rebases on oval bases (they come with the tiny 30mm round clear bases)

The kind of people who would "call you out" on this are the kind of people you should consider blessed to not be playing anyway, so it's a win-win for you.

Not even technically. Between lack of official sizes and variance between the base size included in different boxes, base sizes are frankly officially a grey area.

It also doesn't matter very much, particularly with circular bases (it can matter a little with oval). Measuring from the base, distance between models is going to be consistent for the duration of the game (though this was an issue with measuring from a 'part of the model' in AoS 1.0)

Efficiency is the highest virtue.
