Draco, by Ian Watson, screenwriter of Stephen Speailmens A.I.

Jokes aside, for me it has to be the first Gaunt's Ghosts book, First and Only.

I just finished the first three Heresy novels, and I must admit, they were pretty great. I was going to get Flight of the Eisenstein next, but I decided I'd give the Heresy a bit of break, and look at 40k instead. I was looking into Gaunt's Ghosts before I realized there were over 15 of them! Now I'm thinking of going with the first Eisenhorn trilogy instead, before going back to Eisenstein - I'll likely hate the word Eisen after that - What do you guys recommend.

I'm a big fan of the Daniverse in general, but I have to give the gold medal to Angel Exterminatus. It stands out as far and away the best Horus Heresy novel I have read to date.

I just started an Alpha Legion army for 40K, and REALLY need to get around to reading Legion.

Titanicus is good. Kinda disappointed with the direction GW went with Titans and skitarii after this.

Eisenhorn I guess.

Also have a soft spot for the Cain books, but I feel they have declined somewhat with time.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Kharn: The Red Path is amazing. I really hope more Kharn stuff is coming down the way. The Ahriman stories in the omnibus are also beautifully written, but they're so lush and complex that sometimes I have to take a break from them.

Traitor General! Which is my favourite Gaunt's Ghosts book. And the entire Eisenhorn trilogy for me!

"The best way to lie is to tell the truth." Attelus Kaltos.
My story! Secret War
After his organisation is hired to hunt down an influential gang leader on the Hive world, Omnartus. Attelus Kaltos is embroiled deeper into the complex world of the Assassin. This is the job which will change him, for better or for worse. Forevermore. Chapter 1.

The Angaran Chronicles: Hamar Noir. After coming back from a dangerous mission which left his friend and partner, the werewolf: Emilia in a coma. Anargrin is sent on another mission: to hunt down a rogue vampire. A rogue vampire with no consistent modus operandi and who is exceedingly good at hiding its tracks. So much so even the veteran Anargrin is forced into desperate speculation. But worst of all: drive him into desperate measures. Measures which drives Anargrin to wonder; does the ends, justify the means?

Definitely one of my favs that really captured the 40k universe well.

To add to this, Inquisition War is great old school classic 40k stuff that kinda hits all the big fluff points without getting too ridiculous. It even has Squats!

Any of the NL books by ADB are great, Storm of Iron and Dead Sky Black Sun are pretty solid, as were most of the Word Bearers omnibus books. Most of the Cain books are solid as well.

Ditto. Does a brilliant job of drawing both the Marine and civilian characters, I thought it struck a rare balance too between all the thrilling battles etc and an ambivalence - not just grimdark, something much more complex - about war and warriors and propaganda. Also did a cracking job of presenting figures like Horus as both sympathetic and understandable in new ways, and brutal and alien in others.

I don't know how much I'd have enjoyed it without being "in" on the fact that there are baaaaad things on the way for most of these people, but as it was it remains my very favourite to date.
