Does it stay within the lore to have Clanrats in a unit with different colored fur, robes, and armor? Or are they all very similar to each other for each army?

Typically certain fur colors denote certain types of skaven.

Example: black fur is storm vermin. Grey fur are the grey seers.

Skaven armies are very variable.

First up Auticus has summarised the most common colour conventions, however those are only conventions and not every grey rat has to be a seer (classic painting of Ikit Claw had him as a white rat and he was a Warplock Engineer); whilst its equally possible to have black or dark furred rats who are not stormvermin.

Furthermore armies of Skaven might all come from one Clan or they could be comprised of several Clan forces being united behind a common goal or because the Clawlord has beaten/tricked/convinced/twisted the arm of the others to follow one Clawlord. Or heck the army is on a mission sent by the Council themselves and thus has to work together (even if they don't like it).




If you want a good example Skavenslayer (book Gotrek and Felix series) shows how a united Skaven army might work in the invasion of a city (Nuln). It's Old World but skaven of AoS are basically identical just "more so" than they were before (more rats, more powers, more madness, more crazy science).


So yep you can very easily have a motley of different clan rat furs and armour colours. I think one reason you don't see it at much is simply that people find it faster to paint one style and roll with that rather than changing it up (though to keep sane you'd likely paint all the rats of the same colours at the same time - as much as possible).

Heck nothing says skaven must be the same colour all over and they are very likely to have rats of all shades within their vast clans.

To put it simply - paint them however you want. They're a rat horde haha. Anything is acceptable, and fine within the lore.

With all the infighting there are bound to be a mischief of rats made up of broken up groups and clans in various colors and heraldry.

Just here to back up the other people saying that Rats can have different fur and armor and whatnot colours within their armies. When I bought a load of rats of somebody, they were in a partially painted state for some of them.

I just went with that, giving them a different scheme from the rest of my army, and they're slaves captured from two clans fighting one another.
