So apparently Netflix are throwing an ungodly amount of cash(an actual quote) at a live series adaptation of the sandman comics after a studio movie deal fell through/expired/rotted in development hell.
Not a huge amount of info other than Mr G will be involved in some capacity and rumours that this was one of the reasons Netflix actually picked up Lucifer when amazon deep sixed it.
Cannot link from my stupid phone will update from pc if someone else doesn’t.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis |

Could it even work as live action? I suppose it would take an ungodly amount of money to make it work.

It would work as a series. Not as a movie. Could be good.

Hellboy should have been a series too.
Regarding Sandman, there are lots of ways it could go. It could end up far more grounded than the comic, like Umbrella Academy. Or maybe they go all out. *shrug*

Sandman is about a character who knows he needs to change, but is unable to do so, and also about the nature of stories and our relationship with them. I'd be tempted to use the Endless as a sort of framing device and make the first season an anthology show - lifting individual stories from Dream Country, Fables and Reflections and Hob Gadling*, then in subsequent seasons bring in the main plotlines of The Doll's House**, Season of Mists and The Kindly Ones.
* I'd watch a whole series about him, personally.
**I once found The Doll's House in the comics section of my local library - which was right next to the children's section. Automatically Appended Next Post: Having said that, the Guardian article says it'll cover Preludes and Nocturnes. Presumably some of the cash is going to DC for John Constantine and Doctor Dee.

That makes sense though. Sandmans story kind of meanders. It winds off track and then comes back to things that seemed unimportant. Preludes and nocturns plants a lot of seeds for things that return much later.

If they do something like GoT and have it last 8-9 seasons, they might be able to make it work. Hopefully they'll have learned about keeping the tone from Good Omens. As in, there's a reason the original material hit such a chord.

There was, but the goth crowd has largely gotten bored and wandered off at this point.
I'm not sure current culture will have much patience for this, or what 'TV writers' will do to 'adapt' it.

The execution is the thing. If the writing is good, the show will be good. Again, the writers of Umbrella Academy managed to adapt a batgak crazy, often frenetic superhero comic into a highly popular, well-crafted, GROUNDED, quieter, more character-driven television show. You can certainly see the comic's presence in the show, but the energy and tone is quite different IMO. Which is a good object lesson in this age of spoiled, demanding fans.

Maybe they'll have Neil Gaiman involved in the writing. He wrote the Good Omens show.

Neil Gaiman basically says season 1 will be 11 episodes for the Preludes & Nocturnes storyline ,
the plan it to 'update' things by 30 years
Neil will be cowriting the pilot, but no other info on with who or whether he'll also cowrite the rest of the series, and as yet nothing has been written

DC also recently canned the "Vertigo" imprint that they've used for it for several decades now.

KIND of canned the vertigo imprint.
They actually just renamed it. DC has 3 imprints now. A child friendly, the standard, and black for 18+. Sandman and the vast majority of the vertigo imprint are now under the black label. It's not really gone, just using a different name.

would be nice if it happens but Gaimanites are hella touchy, me I'll be happy with a live action Gilbert, Merv and Matthew

I think this could make a great TV series, but I do wonder if live action is the best medium for appropriately conveying it. I feel like a high quality animation would fit much much better.

"Child friendly" vertigo is like a G rated deadpool or a sphere.
There is no point.

Well, Constantine's role is just a cameo, and Dee being the antagonist was just a continuity nod to get DC fans of the time interested in this new series--you could replace both of them with original characters and not lose anything. The comic largely moved away from being connected to the DC universe after the first storyline, and was better for it. I think Lyta (and Daniel) would be the only things that would need some rejigging if the connections to the wider DC universe were entirely jettisoned.

You can ditch any connection between Daniel's parents and the DC universe and the story still works. I know this, because I read The Dolls House about two decades ago and it all made sense, and until last year I didn't know they were DC superhero characters.
