See this text by Dimitris Almyrantis, for glimpses of how folk religiosity looked like before modern times. Highly interesting as inspiration for 40k.

This is surprisingly well written and insightful for Quora. Is it mean to say that? W/E. It's amazing how much religion changes over time. Most modern Christians, even the most ardent fundamentalists, would probably have been labelled heretics on par with the Arians by the Church proper 1000 years ago. Hell, modern Catholics would probably be labelled heretics 1000 years ago. It's all quite different now, and even compared to a century ago things have changed quite a bit.

This is like the things first year undergrads give me re: pre-modern religion. It tries to make a valid point - that medieval religion was highly varied and not composed of homogenous religious blocks, but it does largely by contrasting it with modern religion, which is no more (or less) characterised by orthodoxy than at any stage in the past.

Elite religious practitioners have always sought to impose a level of consistency, and people have always largely ignored it in favour of whatever they felt worked for them.
