So I really do like the idea of the defensible terrain rules, and gererally I think they are ok. However, the rule stating any unmodified saving roll of a 6 automatically succeeds bothers me a bit. My issue is that, for example, marine armies gain no benefit from this sort of cover. I know they still benefit, technically, from the 'unmodified roll' stipulation , but saving throw modification in aplocalypse are as rare as a Catholic on a shrine world! Anyone else got any thought on this?

Marines still benefit from the -1 to hit and they don't need to benefit from the save bonus, they already have good saves. Dark Eldar don't benefit from the rules for superheavies (they have none), Tau don't benefit from the rules for Psykers, Tyranids don't benefit from the rules for transports. Some bits of the rules are there for other armies and that's fine.

Infiltrators gain an unmodified 5+, so your marine scouts and other invisible ninjas still benefit. Send them to garrison pkaces you like and storm those you want with proper power armour

There are units in the game that have a 7+ (or worse) save so any Large Blast marker auto-wounds. Can't save a 7+ on a d6. These units need to be in Defensible Terrain to have even a small chance of staying on the table.

Marines generally don't care about the "cover" save that defensible terrain gives.

Yep, units that are essentially walking tanks do not benefit at all from the "Cover" portion of defensible terrain.

Vehicles can't claim cover at all in apocalypse. No way no how.

But given how generally speaking, weapons are just worse at damaging vehicles than infantry (or if a weapon is better at damaging vehicles, it generally gets fewer shots than an equivalent anti-infantry weapon) it tends to even out.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
