Does anyone know the size of rhino and land raider doors (I have neither am getting back into 40k starting from scratch).

I’m asking because it occurred to me that forgeworld has a bunch of fancy 3D chapter symbols on rhino and land raider doors. I wonder if, size-wise, either using a whole door, or perhaps a shaved off circular portion, could be used as a storm shield for an HQ character. Is this crazy and a no go, or is it something that could plausibly work?

I can do a lot of things, like eat an entire pizza for lunch, lol.

Let’s assume I care about copyright law and also that I want to use GW parts for conversions. Would my idea here work? You didn’t say either way.

I own these doors and they would be too big/disproportionate to really work as shields for a space marine. If you wanted to shave them down you'd have to do so much filing to get it thin enough to look right you'd heavily risk damaging the details as resin is much softer than HIPS plastic. If you want chapter themed shields I'd recommend 3-d printed as previously mentioned.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

Depending on the size of the symbol, just the symbol can work. I did that with a Crusader for my Inquisition, using the fleur-de-lys from a Battle Sisters' Rhino door- The size is fine for a human sized model.

NSFW warning:

Spoiler:

A whole Rhino door is too large for anything short of an Ogryn. I don't have a good picture, but you can see the gunner and door of the Rhino in the side view. The door is as tall as a Marine and a lot wider. And Land Raider doors are even larger than that, if only slightly.

Ah ha, great. So symbol alone may work. Question, is that symbol there the entire thickness of the door? As in the part was originally a door with that symbol on it and you just carved it out, but kept the thickness?

There is plenty of 3d products that don't violate copyright law, but.. if you insist on GW parts for conversions you are cutting out a huge 3rd party opportunity (not just 3d printed). Also... OEM doors are massive compared to the models. You could order the finecast thunderhammer/stormsheild kit. I just picked one up.

Such a bizarre reply. The whole point was to get shields with Chapter symbols. That can’t happen with (legitimate) third parties and it certainly cannot happen with a chapter-symbol-less finecast set. Gheesh.

It works perfectly. GW/FW sculptor Mark Bedford used some on some Black Templar termies years ago. You just trim them to shape (the BT ones he did were in a kite shield shape IIRC) and heat up the resin a tad over a slightly curved object like a mug to get the curvature.

The fleur-de-lys is an add-on part you're supposed to glue on the default Rhino door and consists of the flower itself (that I painted gold) and a circular base (silver in my case). For size you can check the picture of an Excorcist the GW store. Being round, it shares the width but not the height of a Rhino door.

With regard to how comparable thickness of the circular base is to the thickness of the Rhino door, I'm afraid I can't say from memory how close it is. The silver bit would be anywhere between half the thickness to close to the door. Sorry I can't be more specific. I'd err on the side of caution and advise to expect twice the thickness if no one else can provide actually measurements.

A few offcuts of plasticard is all you need, and you can make lovely Breached style shields if you’re so inclined... here’s some I made earlier:

If you're desperate to spend an obscene amount of money for shields...go for it!
