Hey folks!

In years past, there'd be a multi-page thread by this point with details about the Nova Open, top armies, people, etc....

What's the news?

The game had never been more popular and had gotten better and better since GW engaged those that kept their game afloat during the dark times (6th and 7th ed) and brought them on as playtesters. The "tournament hammer" crowd literally saved this game...what have you done for 40k?

To the OP: maybe Dakka isn't the 40k forum it used to be.

Sadly I don't think any other forum or site really took over? Or is there somewhere where people actually discuss tournaments?

It's funny, I'm on my way home from NOVA and it sure was a packed crowd for something so "community destroying"...

They saved it for Min/Max WAAC players. Not for the average gamer.

I totally enjoyed NOVA this year. I always find it funny how the latest hotness in terms of models seems to allude me, though. Last year it was the rise of the smash captains and this year it was the custode grav-tank and Skorpius...those things were everywhere. And seeing orks playing at the top tables was awesome which was only topped by Tau finishing first...ok not Tau obviously the guy playing Tau but none the less it did my heart good seeing that. And while I enjoy going for the gaming aspects I also go to meet and play against people from all over the world and have a hell-of-a good time with my peeps afterwards at the local pubs laughing about how horrible our rolls were that day or how I completely forgot any strats or orders for my guard units on turn 1 because I was so happy to be going first in one my games. I never go expecting to win anything - just to have 4 days of celebrating the hobby I love with my friends. That's what NOVA is about for me.

Counter-point: the narrative events at NOVA (which I was there for) were also so well attended that most of them had waitlists and people standing in line to hopefully get some extra tables allocated. But go ahead and keep whining about how people are having fun doing something you don't enjoy and somehow that ruins the game for you.

going to have tp agree wiyh Mr P here, didnt one of the Frontline chaps say that at least half of the players just turn up to these big torny for a weekend or so of gaming against different people with no real intention of doing much better than breaking even with the win/loss, not exactly the WAAC boogyfolk who so offend you with their grasp of primary school maths

Top army is Tau. Also Custodes tanks are stupidly undercosted. Even the gigantic, ridiculously oversized terrain-eye-sores and weird LOS houserules common in the US are increasingly struggling to contain the leafblower meta that's already turned the game into a shooting gallery using GW RAW terrain rules.

The end.

R/warhammercompetitive is where most of the tournament scene is now I think. Dakka has some very militant posters and the whole forum runs really hot/cold on competitive 40k (as even seen in this thread).

WIthout tournaments you wouldn't have any of the popularity that has occurred in 8th. No one wants to watch streams or listen to podcasts about random dudes playing 40k in their basement. Considering GW"s lead rule designer was a Judge at Nova, I'd say these events are an immense help to the critical problem GW faced in the past/present (Actual writing of rules)

There really aren't two sides here. I mean, sure, on one side you have a super popular, profitable game around which an entire cottage industry of podcasts, YouTube channels, blogs, etc have not only become profitable, but for some their way of life. There are multiple ways to play the game, all of which are supported by the games creator, and an entire "professional circuit" has been created by a 3rd party, which has only increased the game's popularity. That same 3rd party has even developed a more "hobby centric" tournament circuit so no one feels left out for not wanting to live on the bleeding edge of the game's power creep...

And on the other side, there are some guys on forums who aren't happy...probably because there preferred method of play isn't exactly how everyone else wants to play. (If that sounds dismissive, it's because it is. When someone complains "my ice cream is too cold", you don't take them seriously)

So...yeah. Just play some 40k, make some friends, and stop complaining on forums.

What they are is good scout area for GW to see what models people already have and ergo what to change to make people buy more models. That's what the "balance" changes are. Changing unbalance to different unbalance to get more models sold.

Bull. The gw design guys that show up to the major us events are way, way more concerned with the appearance of the hobby than anything. They modify rules if something is toxic but seem to have genuinely jumped on the "good balance is good for everyone and sales" train. Accountants aren't in charge of the design studio anymore.

OR Forums are largely a dying medium, and reddit and facebook groups have taken over as where discussion happens. Especially because those facebook groups better police the negative feedback from people like yourself, which no one looking for discussion about NOVA wants to read. The existence of Best Coast Pairing also makes forum posts about lists, and news less relevant, when one can just log on and see who and what is winning. Whether you personally like the state of the game or not it is undeniable that the community is the healthiest it has been in a long while.

Take away tournaments and a good chunk of the player base collapses. Tournaments have always been what drives communities around me.

NOVA isn't just a tournament. There's narrative events, non-GW events, board games, and so on.

Speaking of tournaments, around my area I think most people use tournaments to come out and get some 40k games in - having a booked space filled with players and such really helps with the organizational issues around getting games in. I've been thinking lately about organizing round-robins for that purpose, to make sure people can get 3 games in on a day and play with a variety of armies. A local organizer/terrain-fanatic did a fantastic job organizing a couple of events like that and they were really fun.

Of course, around my area we also have a league going on on top of everything else, but I can't image we're the only people using BCP to run leagues as well as tournaments.

We interact with a lot of the people at the event, naturally. Around 200 people played in the Narrative event alone.

The feedback is universally that this is the best edition of 40K they've seen in years, and seems to constantly get better.

Games Workshop is also crushing sales of 40K magnitudally compared to historical figures.

When someone says the game is scaring people away other than WAAC tourney players, they're basically saying "I don't have any idea what I'm talking about."

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

I didn't get a chance to go to NOVA this year. But my friends did the TRIOS tourney, they had a very good time.

There wasn't any major sportsmanship drama, there was fairly even faction representation at top tables, and the tourney didn't have any major major drama. Maybe thats why there is less chatter.

Bedouin Dynasty: 10000 pts
The Silver Lances: 4000 pts
The Custodes Winter Watch 4000 pts

Well, there was the huge issue with the Nick Rose/Erik Trock match (judge allowed Nick to retroactively deep strike a huge melee squad that should've been destroyed for being in reserves for too long AFTER Erik moved his units on the belief they were destroyed. Erik was not allowed to re-do his movement). But that seems to not be getting as much play as past scandals.

The reason there is possibly because it didn't happen on-stream and also it seems to have just been a colossal screw-up by the judge rather than potential cheating from the player. I'd have preferred the player who got his rules wrong just owned his mistake and carried on but ultimately, if the reports are accurate, it seems like it was really the judge that got it wrong.

There's not much need for a discussion on here. We can see the top lists easily enough on BCP and multiple podcasts/YouTube videos will go into a ton of detail of the event over the best few days.

Nova didn't seem to have the usual names in the top spots as far as I could tell, many of the top 10 have not been at the top of other events.

Possibly a result of NOVA using its own mission pack rather than ITC?

In France, where I mostly play, we have the same issues, some big names get preferential treatment by judges. Just my opinion but just as is in any comp event no? after all, even in such a big money sport such as football/soccer, everyone knows Real Madrid got preferential treatments by referees in several of the last champion’s league finals so... I am talking tricky stuff like dubious penalty shots, but dubiousness leaning way more often to the benefit of Real Madrid than against.
Here it is apparently Nick Rose = bigger name than Erick Trock.
Apparently being the important word... Does anyone have more info ? The melee squad was the 10 twisted helix aberrants, it is incredible that nick forgot about what is probably his most important unit, though I am personally beat after only 3 games in on day. So I can only imagine what 5 or 6 games does to a player over 2 days...

Goonhammer is working through their NOVA experiences. As a crew they ran the gamut when it comes to list brutality (and thus GT success), so the write-ups as a whole should be a pretty good slice across the event.
