Friend and I had enjoyed a few games of the new(ish) Apocalypse and thought we would try it with Epic and AT models.

We agreed to not use Strats and mostly used basic units without many upgrades.

Played a relaxed game of 252 Points each in about 2 hours which was pleasingly quick.

We enjoyed the sense of scale and movement, did not find any rules issues as yet and hope to try some more games

Any one else tried it in this way - thoughts, comments, tips?

Seeing the old plastic and cardboard epic buildings brings back fond memories!

I hope these rules end up being a play test of sorts for an epic release.

Nostalgia! Might have to try it myself!

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Yes, it works great.

Some gentlemanly handwaving in unit placement may be required, but there's no silly conga lines, you get to maneuver properly without filling every inch of the table, units move and shoot over relatively believable distances, the system in general flows very well at a company level... I like it quite a bit.

Well, they are that already if you've got models. The rules are very much an amalgamation of Epic's different eras and incorporate all degrees of weight from grots to titans better than 40k does.

Did you use the Strategems?

We didn't bother as they have not reeleased them for all factions (ie none for Titan Legions), there are some very powerful ones and some....less so.

My only concern was if some units are built assuming they will get strats used on them.....

I hope GW gets a proper FAQ out for the game to iron out the errors in the first release but otherwise it seems a good and quick system for this level of play.

Command assets are fine and important, though not crucial to the game. Thing is, the command structure is somewhat built onto them in the sense that leading characters are pretty useless milksops without generating cards. Besides maybe one or two outliers, they are NOT going to imbalance the game to a card fest, but rather give you some reliability in command or extra hits here and there. Hint, the better ones aren't about hitting stuff. Also, there being some powerful cards isn't a problem because you have a 30 card deck mostly consisting of less powerful things and any army built to maximize srawing is going to fold like a house of cards against actual troops.

Titan legions can use the general ones just fine. And no, units are not built with assumed cards, except psykers. Psykers are costed with hefty extras with the assumption that you use the cards, because their powers are there.

You should give them a try, just make the decks so both sides get equally cool tricks. Also, if houserules suit your tastes, you can use other factions' cards that feel thematic. That's what we did.

Yeah we used them in our 40k test and found some very powerful combos:

The get any unit back as long as you roll its PL with the make a dice result anything you want was nasty.

Big ones were also take all saves on a D12 - kept my Knights in the game alot longer and regen/unbreaking ones.

Will talk it over and see what we all think...
