So Im a returning player, with a big old army of ugly old army of old sculpt chaos space marine squads, and I have found that my old wargear options that did decently in the past now arent up to snuff the way they used to be. (RIP free bolt pistol)

So now Im trying to build up my squads by replacing just the champions and special weapons guys while keeping the old basic bolter marines, but I have no idea what to equip my champions with. I know I want to keep my marines semi cheap and shooty, and keep my daemons and elites for melee, but giving my champion a normal bolter just seems so wrong. What do you guys recomend?

Combi Bolter Chainsword is good with Bolter Discipline and nice and cheap.

Combi-bolter + chainsword for normal champions.
Chosen and Havoc champions can make use of combi-plasma, if you're running a combi-plasma/plasma or rotor cannon squad (particularly, out of a Termite Assault Drill).

I'm a fan of combibolter + chain axe. +1pt but your aspiring champ normally has 3 attacks now (when charging or charged), so the 1pt cost of giving him S5 -1AP is a good price imo.
