Right now the jury is kinda out since the book is ever so new.
That said a few generation thoughts:
1) They don't appear to have any outright "bad" choices. Whilst they've quite a nice and diverse range and there are some models that clearly have niches that you have to think about; nothing is screaming "I'm so bad if you take me you'll cry about it". This is good because it means that, with the right approach, most purchases should be valid.
2) Battle-line wise I would say a solid investment is more Mortek Guard. The weapon choice depends on how you want to run them. Neither weapon is bad, but the swords are generally going to favour smaller units whilst the spears larger. This is simply an element of mechanics - if you've 40 warriors then getting more into close combat range becomes the more pressing concern; whilst if you've got less than say 20 warriors then performance per warrior becomes all the more important.
However units of 20 with spears and 40 with swords will still be very effective.
3) Cavalry - with the liege lords they are great and either as a single unit of 5 or 10 for a faster support; or go wild with larger units if you really like them. Personally for early purchases I'd say 5 or 10. They tend to, with their abilities and with the lord support; weight a bit more toward spears over swords.
4) Mortian leaders (all 3) are worth their weight in the right situation. Check their abilities and build them into the list you're building, even if its only rough. There is, again, no dud here, just specific uses for each one.
5) Gothizzar Harvester. It is a tank in combat and it lets you heal and resurrect nearby units. Used to support mortek guard and deathriders. A very versatile and tough support model.
6) Mortek Crawler. The only ranged firepower the faction has (outside of spells). Even a single one can earn its self a good solid position in a force. Just don't forget that whilst it has close combat attacks its primary weapon can't hit anything closer than 6 inches; so don't leave it all alone or it might come to harm.
7) Stalkers VS Morghasts I'm still not totally sure on. They fit the same slot in terms of points (more or less); however the morghasts have a native faster and flight movement characteristic; however Stalkers can get a flight boost with a power ability; but you're paying for that instead of something else during the game if you take them. Both roughly fit that "hits harder" slot and are pointed for being a nice elite choice. The kind of unit that you can use to threaten a flank and support other faster moving units or to strike out on their own.
Overall its hard to make firm chioces as most things, within the right list and strategy, have a lot at present.
