Looking at the Imperial Armour for the Adeptus Astartes book, if an infantry unit (or vehicle in case of lazors) is within range, and is the closest unit, but is not visible (or is engaged), the Tarantula will just get stuck and not shoot at all. Someone mentioned in another thread that FAQ updates this: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/765224.page#10189334 but I didn't find this in any faq. What is the current ruling?

It's in the FAQ that the rules for the Tarantula are found in, the Imperial Armour: Forces of the Astra Militarum FAQ.

Oh, OK, I was looking in the Astartes Armour FAQ. Confusing, but I guess it works. So this means the Tarantula will get stuck if the nearest visible target is engaged, but not if it's hidden, am I correct? So if I have two non-engaged units in range, the closest one is not visible and the other one is visible, I simply shoot the visible one?

Correct, you must shoot the "closest visible" target.

Its important to note that the astartes and astra militarum tarrantula datasheets have different names ones a tarrantula sentry gun ones a tarrantula battery and so are completely different units their rules faqs are not interchangeable

So yes GW ruleswritting at its finest

For example the AM ones explode and the SM ones don't

The SM ones are FA while AM are HV

You follow the flow chart so for SM

So a HB

Fire at closest infantry
If no infantry in range fire at closest unit
Cannot fire at character unless its closest model

If nearest infantry or non infanty as appropriate can't be targeted e.g. no los its in combat its a character but not the closest model then it can't fire
