I remember a book or some fluff, where a chapter of space marines had a malfunctioning Sus-an Membrane. This is the SM transplant that let's space marines go in to an unconscious state to recover from mortal wounds, akin to hibernation. The malfunction caused the sus-an Membrane to activate randomly. In the worst cases it was permanent.

Was this just some random brain worm that developed into irreversible head cannon, or was there something in print like this? Looking for some help here guys.

That sounds familiar but I can't quite place it. I think it was a piece from an old SM codex (possibly 3rd edition). From memory, I don't think it was a whole chapter, just one initiate. It might have been the Catelepsean Node rather than the sus-an membrane.

The Doom Warriors are the Chapter with a defect in their Catalepsean Node preventing them from ever sleeping.

Can't say I remember reading about the sus an membrane defect though, sorry!

The Imperial Fists have lost their Sus-an Membrane and the Betchers Gland. So no suspended animation or spitting poison for the Imperial Fists, unless the Primaris bring it back.

Imperial Fist supplement said they don't have it and no mention of a primaris exception, thus... they don't have it

Are you thinking of the Blood Wights? They're a fan-made chapter, but they sound like what you're describing.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

It was mentioned in the book 'space marine' from many many moons ago, about imp fists, the charcters were talking to a blood angel.

If the blood weights are really old, then maybe. It's some old bit of fluff that just stuck with me for a long time. It was so striking, the idea that mighty gene forged super heroes were susceptible to narcolepsy. It was another genetic fault that, after thousands of years had taken hold. It made sense amongst lycanthropy and vampirism. Equally tragic, just much less dramatic. I imagined a giant mausoleum full of marines on life support. The desperate desire of the brethren to awaken them, but incapable of doing so because of a gene trait inherited from their venerated, deific ancestors.

Brilliant! Wasn't it a book of short stories?

Exactly! I knew it was from waaayyyy back. I've been playing since Rogue Trader.

Nope. I'm pretty sure we've sorted it. It's some ancient bit of pre Black Library that was stuck in my head. Never canon, and terribly outdated. Thanks though

Dark Imperium states that Primaris IFs have the fully suit of extra organs again.

Thats since been explained the in war of the beast. The IF still had their sus an up until then. They were wiped out. They were replaced by the Fists exemplar who took the IF name and all their stuff. But they had lost their sus an because of a radiated sun. I would be surprised if they lost the betchers the same way.

Random catatonia sounds a bit like the Darkness - chapter curse of the fists successors the Excoriators.

I think it was something they retconned on to IF successors. Kinda like the Flesh Tearers. The FTs used to be the worst of the BAs successor chapters, but they changed it to the Knights.

"Do we bemoan such losses? No! We are the Fists! We do not need to hibernate or spit venom. We crush our enemies!" - Teachings of Rhetoricus

I can't remember where the quote is from, but Lexicanum puts it in the Book of Five Spheres entry. 3rd edition codex, perhaps, on the page with Lysander (as sergeant) stats?

Mythbusted, I got the 3rd Edition Codex from the bookcase and there is nothing like this on the Sergent Lysander page! There is some cool stuff about Chaplain Xavier though...
