Hello All,

In the 80's & 90's was a very competitive Warhammer Fantasy player with many of my armies appearing in White Dwarf.

I have decided to get into 40K as a Necron. The way I built armies in the past was through experimenting on model conversions, settling on a theme, then build as "competitive" an army I can within my theme.

However, I do not know/understand what a truly competitive Necron list option(s) looks like. Are they all Doomsday arks & Doom scythes, with filler units? OR are there many competitive list options to consider?

I do understand Warriors are a poor unit in comparison with other options (Immortals as an example)....

I have looked at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWFK2sn8IZg&t=765s from Almost Pro Gaming for one persons current views.

And watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM4hYpXiDG0 of a recent Necron battle report

What I am looking for is competitive Necron list I can start acquiring from a zero owned model starting point, with the standard 750,1500,2000 point lists in mind as I collect & build.

Model count is not a limiting factor... if a heavy Immortal list is one you think is competitive I would love to see it & understand your reasoning!

One thing I am trying to avoid in this army build, is building the army around one trick or a single unit that everyone but me understands may get significantly "nerfed" in the near future, as all my models will be significantly converted (25-75% of each model converted).

Thanks for any and all feedback!

Doom6 is the only competitive necron army list. 3 DDAs, 3 doom scythes. Its usually a battalion and the air wing. You have already seen some competitve 2k lists. Points changes will be in 12 months with CA 2021, some new rules will come when necrons will get their PA book.

At 1.5k i would play this list :

Spoiler:

++ Battalion Detachment +5CP (Necrons) [90 PL, 9CP, 1,500pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

Battle-forged CP [3CP]

Detachment CP [5CP]

Dynasty Choice
. Dynasty: Sautekh

+ HQ +

Cryptek [5 PL, 85pts]: Artefact: The Veil of Darkness, Canoptek Cloak, Staff of Light

Imotekh the Stormlord [10 PL, 1CP, 140pts]
. Warlord: Warlord Trait (Sautekh): Hyperlogical Strategist

+ Troops +

Immortals [8 PL, 135pts]: 9x Immortal, Tesla Carbine

Immortals [8 PL, 150pts]: 10x Immortal, Tesla Carbine

Immortals [8 PL, 150pts]: 10x Immortal, Tesla Carbine

Tesla immortals are fantastic anti infantry with MWBD. Imotekh can do it twice on sautekh units. Scarabs are fast objective grabbers, smite interceptors, can tie up units in melee. Tomb blades are fast, -1 to hit, and can deliver tons of shots at 12".

750 pts. list :

Spoiler:

++ Patrol Detachment (Necrons) [42 PL, 733pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

Dynasty Choice
. Dynasty: Sautekh

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.... You have certainly given me a lot to think about.

I look forward to seeing competitive list ideas from others, so I can then see options available & factor in my conversion plan

Any idea (early or late 2020) when the Necron PA Book will appear?

My main driving passion for playing Necron is the conversion work I want to do, I know it will be a fun (year long project).

I will be starting with converting Immortals & Destroyers (since almost every army will include these basic unit) trying a few different appearances until I get it right, then convert a few other models until I get one of each of my additional units appearances set before filling the units out.

Key for me at the moment is I have zero models & am searching Swap forum, e-bay, etc.. for cheap Necron models (pre-painted to strip & disassemble or parts) to test initial conversion ideas, which I will post in the appropriate forum here.

Thanks again!

Check out this thread : https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/752626.page No need to read everything, just read the last 100 pages. The first post has a unit grading list, which units are good, and which arent. The list hasnt been updated with the recent point changes from CA2019. No idea when the necron PA book will appear. When you convert use magnets.

Previously it's been basically imotek, cryptek, 25-30 tesla immortal, 3xdda, 3xdoom scythe and then ~400 to taste(tomb blades or destroyers being prime candinates).

However CA19 made heavy destroyers quite cheap. You can get full 9 for about 120 pts less than the flyers which might make them viable alternative. Too early to tell yet. Flyers suffer from issue that if even one dies the other 2 becomes basically useless as it's for the stratagem you take them and you go first only half the time. Putting all 3 out of LOS isn't quaranteed and 1 is very easy to take out. Heavy destroyers provide long range AT on easier to hide squadrons which don't even need CP all that much as they hit on 3+ rerolling 1's and S9.

Not proven yet(CA is fairly new) but it could be viable.

If meta shifts toward high S d6 damage weapons then quantum shield spam with ghost arks, doomsday arks, command barges could become a thing. It did score well in tournament before already though that was during castellan meta so it was sort of an anti-meta list. But with point drops for QS units(barring dda) if that meta comes back QS units are in place to exploit it.
