I have bought many things from Ebay, postage is always something that ticks me off.
I have sold stuff and posted straight away before payment has cleared, but when you set a price of say £1.50 then post it 2nd class and then wait the few days for funds to clear really annoys me especially when you do this
Just why?

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at. Looks like a standard padded envelope with parts in a small sealed back included within with the padded envelope ripped where its been opened?
Unless you mean but the size of envelope compared to the small packet; which might simply be a result of them using what they've got in stock - since its unlikely that they do enough trade to have a wide range of varied sizes of envelope to buy at bulk discount. Chances are they found one or two sizes that work and just buy them at bulk to use.

My point was that they use over sized packing and charge extra

That's a fairly standard padded envelope. It does seem large for two bases or whatever you bought, but the vendor likely doesn't have smaller envelopes. I'm sure there'd be much more outrage if they shipped it in a standard letter envelope which got torn/mangled in the post.
When I buy from ebay, I don't buy things that I think are unreasonable priced re: shipping. If I think the shipping is worth it, I don't care what kind of package it arrives in as long as it arrives when it should, and its in one piece.

Yeah its likely that whoever is selling bits doesn't typically sell just 2 bases on their own. So they likely have lot of envelopes around that size bought in bulk for a discount. They can't run their business having loads of different sized envelopes because any profits they get would be eaten up having dozens of different packages. So its likely just purely easier and more economical for them to have fewer sizes.
I mean I'm not sure what you can be annoyed about when you already agreed to the shipping and packaging price before you placed your order/bid.
Like Cruentus I'd be happier its arrived safe and sound.

This MIGHT sound like a rant or moan, but it's not supposed to be.
I sold on ebay for a while. As a seller, postage is expensive in terms of time and money. I have to buy boxes or padded envelopes, bubble wrap and/or bags, and then postage itself.
I used to charge £2.80 for most things, and I'm sure that cost me some sales. £1.80 went to the post office (thank you "standard size charges") and £1 went towards packaging.
With the leaning on ebay towards buyers being OP, if I went back now I'd make sure the funds had cleared before despatching too. That said, it often took me a day or three to GET to the post office around working days....
I don't think any of that is unreasonable. You, of course, are free to disagree.

I always love ordering from Shapeways and my little ziplock bag of bits arriving in a box that’s like a 12” cube.

The other thing about that size of envelope is it goes through the automated sorting machines without a problem
if you get really small ones they jam in the machines, go missing or have to get hand sorted slowing down delivery
