I used to collect 40k many moons ago and would like my space wolf army again, my son is into 40k but without buying any codex I can’t understand if the dark imperium box set is worth it


My son likes the plague marines so that’s an easy win with dark imperium but can I use any of the figures as grey hunters / blood claws etc or am I better of selling the Primaris marines which come with it and starting wolves from scratch?

I got back into Warhammer via the first strike the Primaris marines are ok but they’re not wolves! What’s my options guys? I guess I could take Reivers and the intercessors as options in space wolves but that is probably not my style of army

The gw staff are about as useful as wet blankets as non of them had a clue about space wolves at my local store and were pushing selling starter kits which seem pointless with what’s in them vs what works with a space wolf army ( obviously going on old rules here but the stats from what I can tell are familiar)

the primaris marines can be used as primaris marines in a space wolf army. Space Wolves have their own primaris.

In fact as a Space Wolf player, if you decide to go whole hog on space wolves there is even a Primaris space wolf start collecting box (which has a gorgous Primaris Battle leader mini)

All the Primaris models in the box can be used by the Space Wolves. They wouldn't be Grey Hunters or Bloodclaws, though they have their own rules.

I think OP wants real space wolves, because a Primaris by anyother name is still a Primaris. you can try buying the chaos half of the box set on ebay.

ayup. honestly I'm of the opinion the SW pack box is one of the best kits out there, it gets you so much stuff, you can use to bling out the rest of your army

I think maybe there's a disconnect going on here. I don't think anyone is suggesting you take the regular Primaris minis and just paint them a bluey-grey.

I think what's being suggested is that you get hold of the Space Wolves Primaris Upgrade Sprue and make your Primaris into "real Space Wolves".

Yes, this. Leftover bits from Grey Hunters kit work great too.

If you have no problems kit bashing and spreading the wolfity wolf a bit thinner buy the 15 man squad of Blood Claws and the Dark Imperium box set.

the the blood claw box has eneugh bits that you can build your blood claws and also make your primaris marines look like they belong in the space wolves. while the basic dark imperium stuff will limit your ability to swap out shoulder pads, you can EASILY put differant helmets on them.

I had that problem too, could share my solution to this:
just paint primaris in different scheme. The look silly next to marines as part of same army, so different colors will make them look like 2 different forces. Aesthetic difference will be washed away.

I tried to add wolf tail, or use viking bare head, but imho that was stupid, primaris too sci-fi.

Yeah, you can get the Wolves' shoulder pads on the Primaris using a stanley knife to carve the Primaris pads off, won't be much left of the Primaris pads to share back though. Still, put some blue tac on the blood claws' shoulders while you ask marine players if they have any blank shoulder pads you can buy, trade, have.

I added a few extras to my Dark Imperium Intercessors are they looked very good for just a few minute's work.

Is my army practical, no but it is non stop fun, it will be even better with cheaper wolves (I really think fenrisian wolves will be 4pts a model after CA19's FAQ comes out.

I'd rather some kind of mobility boost like a real melee unit - movement, natural outflank, advance and charge, I'd even settle for access to Cunning of the Wolf.

I agree as well that they need a buff. I'm making a guess off of the fack that in CA19 Ragnar's 2 wolves dropped to 4pts each, and our fast attack section is a copy paste from index.
