Just wondering if i can get help on a rule clarification was looking through the GW FAQs and couldnt find much. For smite targetting if you have one unit 6" from you not in your LOS and another unit 12" away in LOS are you allowed to target the unit 12" away? Or does the closer unit not visible block you from smiting? Kinda like how characters work?

Your opponent was wrong. The rules are in the text of smite make it clear - "the closest visible enemy unit". Which enemy unit that you can see, is the closest?

Compare this to the character rule where it says that characters have to be both closest and visible to shoot at them. If smite was to work in the way your opponent wanted then it would be written the same way as the character rule.

Your opponent was wrong.
They were likely getting confused with the character targeting rules, which work similarly to how he described. Where if a < 10 wound character is in plain view, but another unit is out of sight but closer, the character cannot be targeted.

Smite works differently. It simply targets the nearest visible unit.
If the closest unit is out of sight, then it simply targets the next closest that is in sight.

The closest visible enemy unit gets smitten. It doesn't matter if another not visible unit is closer.

The power says closest visible. Ask him to show you how his "interpretation" works it's way around that. After he can't, inform him he screwed you over last time and either stop playing with him or start smiting his units properly.

just let him read smite carefully and point to the word visible, if he still says you can't stop playing him

There is no FAQ because it's crystal clear.
