Subject: {Apocalypse} - Anyone playing? I'm looking for some advise.

Hi all, my friends and I are finally getting round to organising a big Apoc game (I brought the rules when they came out).
I can't see much discussion about it anywhere and was wondering if anyone is actually playing?
If you are can you give me your thoughts on the system, anything I should watch out for or change up. I've heard that the cards can be a bit polarizing.
Also if there are any online websites or resources that you know of that could be useful please point me at them.
Thanks.

It's streamlined Epic Armageddon, basically. It's good and overlooked by many, who still have bad taste from the previous slogfests that Apoc was in days gone by.
Regarding the cards, they work nicely if all sides have a similarly powerful deck to begin with. Personally I won't mind using some of the cards across "wrong" factions too, if they make thematic sense (like the Iron Warriors' 5+ ignore damage one for Death Guard instead etc.).
Also, make sure there is enough space for maneuver. Cramped tables, which often happen with these games, simply aren't as fun when the system actually does allow and reward larger picture.

Thanks for the reply, I played Epic back in the day and like the look of the Apoc rules, we just havent had the time to get them to the table as yet.
We have six players but I'm the only one with the cards, I intend to make two generic decks for each side to share and then have a way for players to draw extra cards for their particular faction. Don't think I'm going to go with the card per commander thing in the book as that just seems to reward min maxing play which isn't really what apoc should be about.
Aiming for a 6' x 12' board transitioning from city ruins to industrial then sparse large rock formations to make a nice varied area of play. Not sure on total points as yet, I've asked players to see what they can field as we have very varied collections then I'll decide but likely in the region of 800-1000 PL per side.depending on how many super heavies we have. I'm discouraging hordes of guardsmen and Boyz.

The thing is, generating cards and allowing extra effects IS largely what commanders are about, they are very much not there to fight stuff on their own like they are in 40k. They are very fragile if played straight, so eliminating them to cut down the opponents' card draw is a valid tactic. I recommend trying it that way first, especially given your game size is pretty big and thus the effect of any singular card is smaller (discounting some fringe combos, which can be discouraged between reasonable adults).
Min maxed detachments for card generation are pretty much terrible in anything else, so it's unlikely to be that much of an issue.

Thanks for the advice, that's a good point on the commanders as they do seem pretty worthless otherwise, I'll go with the book rule and perhaps not use any of the really problematic cards in the decks I make up.

I haven't played it yet, but I absolutely love the look of the rules as they are. Even the way cards are drawn based on warlords - the fact that warlords are so easy to kill helps to balance things out a bit.

I played it a bunch and pretty much ONLY play it now. Apoc is a better 40k then 40k. (At 100-150pl).
You need to seriously consider what you put into your detachments. Not just keeping them in command, but keeping them functioning together since they are issued orders together.
Do not put a unit that wants to melee in a detachment with units that want to sit still and shoot. Any order you issue to the detachment will cause some part of it to sit around being useless. Think of units as models and detachments as units. How do you build your unit (read: detachment) to be truely effective at its job? Preferably all the models (read: units) are synergizing with the rest and making each other more effective.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.
