Just building my Wraith knight which is the final model of 2 armies I have built/painted to get back into 40k....casual games with a friend who is also an old (30 year ago or so) player.

He will take my AM army, lots of guns as usual(and a Knight) I will play the eldar.

Ok my question....baring in mind this is not something ultra competitive...its a friendly 'lets get back into 40k thing'....how shall I build the knight. Is it stupidly vulnerable without the shield? Would like 2 guns of course but seems pointless if no invuln save that the shield brings or am I just worried over nothing.

Good games are my primary concern here.

Honestly MAGNETS are the best answer. It lets you vary things with one model which means you can build it powerful for one game; weaker for the next etc... It means you can use it how you want in the moment rather than binding yourself to a single loadout - which is very limiting on a high price, high investment (time) model that you likely can't buy 10 of and carry at once to vary your army.

It also means when codex's chagne and weapons shift around you don't suddenly end up with a model that's weaker/more powerful than you want or even a load out that isn't allowed any more by the game rules.

Either Sword and Shield or double Heavy Wraithcannons, even with the Scatterfield it's not too difficult to drop it. However you want to run it be prepared for disappointment.

Wysiwyg is not a rule. Build it however you think looks cool and in your friendly games just declare its loadout before deployment.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Yeah magnets if you can.

From a pts efficiency perspective id run bare bones glaive veriant with a single SC so you can fire and fade him up the board.

Thanks all.

I think I will take a go at magnetizing the arms and see how it goes.

It is an expectation among the tournament circuits, however. And clear visual communication is good form for pick-up games.

I find the primary melee weapons on both Imperial Knights and Wraithknights see very little play; most of the time you get more use out of the foot attacks. With that in mind I'd suggest sticking to the dual-wraithcannon loadout; the suncannon is a really underwhelming main gun for a Knight-scale model (it's approximately equivalent to three starcannons), and while the shield looks cool it doesn't make that much difference to your durability in practice.

And hes talking about playing with his friend with a single wraith knight. None of that is relevant.

@ ishagu - And pay 55pts extra to have no invuln and measily 4 d6 dmg shots?

None of the WK variants are good when compared to other knights. Especially the shooting ones.

But the bare-bones version is at least cheap at 330 pts and has a 5++. It has to be dealt with. Yes, you would stomp everything apart from maybe going for glaive attacks if going up against something heavy duty and feeling adventurous.

And you should stop trying to push your agenda and turn every thread into an argument about how to hobby.
He asked for best loadout to model, the best answer for someone who cares is to magentise...
If he cares about being WYSIWYG and that side of the hobby that is, I assume he does or he wouldn't be asking.

@ OP, if you want to go the magnet route, I would try magnetizing something smaller or practicing on sprues drilling etc.
It can get a bit messy if it's your first time. Also not sure what size magnets you'd need, so cant help you there. Might be a bit trial and error and research.

He's welcome to it. I'm just clarifying that there's a broader context, and more information is generally better than less information.

HA. Wut?

I didn't tell anyone how to hobby. The guy has been out of the game for years. Back when he played WYSIWYG probably WAS a rule. I was informing him that it is not, and my advice was for him to build to taste. How is that telling someone else how to hobby?

Take your butt hurt from another thread and kindly keep it to yourself.

Just wanted to thank everyone for opinions and input.

Went with some magnets.

Never painted anything like this before. Consider myself a decent infantry painter but wow.... This is a lot different. Made some mistakes and learnt a lot. Base still to do.

Looks pretty good!

The more you paint, the more you'll learn. Big models like that are nice and forgiving, too. You can update the paint job over time with ease.

Thanks...wish I could tell you...I found some in the bottom of a hobby drawer...must have had them ages.

I know if you search google there are guides which advise what size to use though.
