When I first started collecting miniatures, Games Workshop had two scales for their Warhammer 40,000 universe- there was their normal gaming scale (about 28mm) and their Epic scale for games like Space Marine and later Titan Legions.

The cool thing about the smaller scale was that the games could include the absolutely massive giant robots that stalked the battlefields of the 41st millennium. The only issue with this scale was that it was VERY small- too small for some of the details we would like to paint.

I’m not sure exactly what motivated it, but the introduction of the Adeptus Titanicus gave rise to a new scale- something in between. This scale is nice because the huge Warlord Titans are about the size of Imperial Knights, and there’s enough room to really add some cool detailing.

And in the setting, they really love to add murals to their giant robots.

These are beautiful and really do capture the spirit of the older art.

I remember buying a copy of White Dwarf issue 149 iirc and it had the Golden Daemon winners in it and many of the paint styles used were very similar to yours.

The scale isn't really different, now they just finally did titans in 6 mm instead of the original 3 mm that were before 6 mm infantry came along (and any 8 mm murmurings are simple misunderstandings). Truescale titans, finally

That aside, great work! I love the variety in heraldry there with small details like the chevroned quartering with a cooler colour, catches the eye nicely.

#ConvertEverything blog with loyalist Death Guard in true and Epic scales. Also Titans and killer robots! C&C welcome.

Using the words 'scale' in conjunction with Titans unless you're talking AT2018 or the (Forgeworld) 40k scale ones is foolish. It's only with these that there has been any consistency at all.

Over the years there have been so many inconsistencies and outright contradictions that it's only the 'figures in the head' (or cockpit) method that has led to the consistency we have now. This is particularly apparent with the old Epic vehicle scale (which again varied widely) as they were traditionally sculpted with a mind toward (generalyl 3:1) pantography for toolmaking. This meant some over-exaggeration was required to keep things recognisable.

With regard to AT2018, a marine is supposedly about 8mm (making standard infantry about 6mm), so it is close to a traditional 6mm scale (as close as GW stick to anything, anyway).

At least the titans are in a different scale than they were.

I thought that the titans first started out with the epic scale game "Space Marine" which had a whole bunch of infantry in the box. I knew that Titan Legions was later (and it was all about the larger robots and vehicles). But I've looked it up now, and you're right- the original Adeptus Titanicus was 1988 (one year before Space Marine).

Sometimes, when people claim that GW scaled vehicles differently than infantry, it is really just about GW not updating their line. I knew a guy who was so certain that the Ork vehicles that were introduced for Gorka Morka were intentionally smaller scale. Really, they were just made years before the current line of orks, and weren't updated to be as large as the other ones.
