Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Hi all,

GOG has got some stupidly discounted deals on a bunch of WFB/40K games.

Included among them are some games that are more modern, like 40K Gladius and Mechanicus. There are some games of dubious quality (Firewarrior), and some really old ones including Shadow of the Hornes Rat, Rites of War, Chaos Gate and Final Liberation.

I find it really hard to believe that Chaos Gate and Final Lib would actually be stable on modern systems, but GOG has a 30 day refund feature and together they come to a mighty $AUD6.18, so it's not the biggest risk in the world.

Have fun catching up on some old games, if you want.

Final Liberation is quite stable and Chaos Gate is also a patched version, so you no longer have to worry (IIRC) about a chaos cultist shooting his pistol and causing the game to crash.

Of the newer games on offer, Mechanicus is well worth getting, either with or without the Heretek expansion.

Darn no dark omen :( That one I would like to replay once. Horned rat is at least similar but that had lot worse UI to play with.

I thought that. Most likely, it's because Dark Omen was written for 3DFX primarily and they haven't patched it as yet

Why would they be unstable, GOG bundles games with a DOS emulator if necessary.

HBMC means because they were already notoriously buggy and unstable on their native systems and time wouldn't have necessarily fixed those issues. Both games had issues with crashing or freezing mid game, with Chaos Gate being so temperamental that literally enemy shooting animations could crash the game at any time.

I got Final Liberation from the discount table at the software store for $2 back in the day. I played sooooo much of that game!

Final Liberation seems to have a lot of fans, would you say it's still worth picking up if I haven't played it before?

Nice one, GOG never disappoints

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

I would say it depends on if you like really old games. It's, to me, just the wrong side of old that you can really feel "limited" by what it can do. It's still a good tactical game, it just lacks many features and a speed and interface even even visual design that might leave some wanting a lot more.

I think if you want a more modern turn based game then Gladius is far more engaging and current, though comes with resources and building up armies in the field. It also lacks titans like the Imperator, but does go up to include a lot of the bigger units like Stegaddons. Plus being newer its got more of the "modern" models that you'd expect - which really fleshes out armies like Tyranids.

If you want limited army building and mostly using what you start with then Armageddon is a better fit, though can also feel lacking in some ways (eg the way its AI is put together means its got no standard skrimish mode; instead you've predefined maps with set races you can be only). It's built off the back of the Panzer games engine.

I should note the GOG Warhammer sale is over, but their Spring Sale jsut started so much of what was on discount likely is on discount again.
