Hey Dakka,
Does anyone have, experience with tabletop simulator on steam?
Are people starting to have virtual games of 40k instead of physical ones, due to the pandemic?
will people be using it or simply catching up on your painting backlog during isolation?

Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

I imagine I'll get some extra painting done.
Hell, if I'm forced to quarantine for some reason, my Orks might even see some actual progress towards finally hitting the table.
(my Ork army & when it'll be table ready is a running joke within my circle. I've had this immense pile of orks/ork parts on my work table for about 15 years. Every now & then a few more orks will coalesce into finished models. Sometimes a random vehicle!) I MIGHT have about 500 pts finished. But whatever the total, the units don't comprise any type of legal formation. Maybe were I to play Kill Team though....

Damn, EvE is still going? I was playing that back in 2004. Good luck not falling to addiction. I'm also waiting on FF7. But I think Doom Eternal will last me awhile.

It has low requirements if you don't care about graphics. Think they keep breaking records for battles each year. How much of that is people multi boxing though... But it seems community is somewhat growing. To me its a great game to have in the background while painting and waiting for layers to dry/take breaks. I like to jump in stealth ships scan systems for goodies and anomalies, chill in space and watch the world go by etc. Hardcore pvp is fun like stealth bombing enemy fleets but takes a long time to get good at lol. Good God... I will probably loose couple years of my life to it once again and my GF will leave me . Im giving Doom a miss until they sort out the bugs and the online play. Will pick it up at a discount down the line. COD warzones dropped and I have downloaded it so might lay that. Played one quick game and it looks fun for a free to play.

I've got a Gundam that I need to finish. I'll probably do that. Then I'll get to making 4 more bolter dudes and then make my Intercessor stand-ins.
I'm not allowed to work from home, which sucks. Luckily my building doesn't have anyone with respiratory problems (to the extreme), and we are screening all the employees each day.

Oh, I know all about EvE's PvP I played till about 2007. Stopped a few months after Interdictors were released because of college. I was true -10 security pirate. 1600 kills, 400 of which were solo kills. Mostly flew interceptors and HACs.

Alliances were a new feature when I was playing. I was around for the release of player owned stations too. I was in a pirate corp called Sniggerdly (as in snicker, the laughter, not the offensive slur) that was pretty well known. It was in Pandemic Legion near the end of when I was playing. We generally disdained alliances for being big and clunky, so it took a long time for one to come along that we'd join. We did a lot of contracts to harass alliances. So lots of time in 0.0 flying around to shut down all their mining, etc. But since we were mercs, we often got hired by the people we were fighting as that was the easiest way to get rid of us. I remember when Goon swarm was first established. Fought against and on their side them several times each.

Tabletop Simulator works great. There's a community for it on Discord where you can find the 3D assets for 40K. You can also find opponents there as well.

There are over 3000 people online on the largest Discord TTS community, of those 160 are very active in the chat rooms and/or regularly play 40k on TTS, there are also over 3500 offline. There are 1-10 games being played on the server at any given time. There are currently more than 50 games of 40k being played on TTS. Total Reddit subscribers has been rising steadily, no Corona-bump as far as I can see. Basement gaming should be doing fine right now, don't know if Warhammer stores are shutting down, probably not in the UK if they're still being lacks. Some bigger gaming communities are probably shutting down, in Denmark we can't congregate more than 10 people together. Vassal 40k is pretty far from the real deal and I see very little reason to try it out, I'd rather play against myself if I had no opponents, TTS gets a lot closer but it's not a perfect replacement either. Try and get your regular opponents to play TTS as well so it's not just strangers you're playing with, that'll probably make the experience more smooth. You also have connection and voice issues that you hopefully don't have in real life.

I miss EvE because Hilmar killed the soul of the game on the Altar of Microtransactions and Popular Appeal, sanding off the rough edges until nothing remained (The final straw that broke the camels back was the Instanced PvE Dungeons, something entirely antithetical to the ethos of EvE as a whole). It was a fun 14 years x2 accounts but at the end of the day I just couldn't support the company in good faith after selling out to a Korean MMO company.
Anyway, TTS is great, especially if you live in the middle of nowhere like myself.

Personally, I think Interdictors killed it. They destroyed the possibility of flying solo or small groups in 0 sec space. Up until that point, you always had some amount of choice on if you fought or not. If you were in a fast enough ship, you could basically always avoid combat, even in the worst case scenario of jumping into a blockade. It meant that a big alliance couldn't stop an interceptor with just raw numbers of inexperienced pilots. You could always blockade out cruisers and larger, but you had to deal with frigs on their terms. They had to actually have their own decent interceptor pilots who could go dogfight an intruder. But Interdictors killed that element. With them, skill doesn't matter, preparation doesn't matter, the ship you're in barely matters. All that matters is if you jumped into an interdictor sphere or not. It added an instant death element to the game that never existed before, and it ruined piracy and skirmishing. I had been planning to quit EvE when I did anyway due to school, but Interdictors made it an easier thing to do.

Being able to be completely safe in EvE is not a good thing. Interdictors were a great addition. Let's not pretend any amount of "skilled interceptor pilots!" is actually enough to catch someone who knows what they are doing. Regardless, they changed it back now anyway, Sceptors warp straight through bubbles so yeah your fast ships for complete safety are fine, oh and look every second +1 is a solo Ceptor and the game is in the worst shape it's ever been.
