GW has been shut down for a short while now and most US states have closed all non-essential businesses. A lot of people are stuck at home and I can't help but think they're burning through their to-paint piles.

Is anyone having trouble getting GW models? I see there's still a healthy trade on eBay and I'm not aware of any shortages, but I do know the company has run Just-In-Time inventory for a while. There's stockpiles in the US (and other countries) but they're not huge, we're talking palettes not stockpiles. It takes time to prepare large shipments, carry them overseas, get them to distribution centers and piece them out to retailers.

At what point do we start to see shortages? Are they already happening, maybe on certain items you would expect to see? Possible GW just avoids this problem entirely using mail order?

Cant get anything here as toys are not classed as essential and after lockdown the postal service does not carry any non essential mail.
Wish I had burned through my to paint pile though... might manage it after a decade of lock down.

It's hard to get a hold of specific GW models, yeah, though you can still get a majority.

In my area, for example, Space Marine Impulsors are hard to get (i.e. presumably popular), even from online retailers, etc.. . Similarly, most (infantry) Grey Knight stuff also seems gone, because stocks already ran low prior to the shutdown and/or people bought a lot to paint during the lockdown due to their recent popularity.

Inversely, if you just want something random to paint, there's boatloads still out there.

GW already had frequent shortages of certain miniatures when they "suddenly" became the new hotness, even when they were operating normally. So I assume this just exaggerates the pressure on the "in-high-demand"-spikes, while it'll probably be years before the last random Rhino or Sunshark Bomber in some FLGs or Warehouses dusty corner is sold, even if GW were to shut down permanently.

I am sure that you will see shortages at some locations, such as online game stores. However, I fall into that category of someone who has way too much already to assemble and paint, and if necessary, most of my collections are OOP so I would be shopping on E-Bay anyways.

The UK retailers that I've looked at have been pretty sparse on stock. I wonder whether it's because they perhaps carry a bit less in stock normally since they're so close to HQ compared to the stores around the world and can order stuff in relatively quickly. Certainly, one store I use a fair bit barely carries any stock at all and orders everything in when a customer places an order, so they're basically closed down for the time being.

I'm OK though, I've got a huge backlog.

I'm not worried about it.
1) I paint relatively slowly & have a seemingly infinite supply of stuff (not limited to just GW stuff) in the primed/WiP catagory. If I never bought another model....
2) A buddy has a 3d printer & is well stocked on spare parts & filament spools. So should I really really need to add something.
3) If I never bought/built/painted another model? I'd still have way more than enough to play any game I've got models for.

Now paint & glue....
I don't have much in the un-built category. Still though I bought several large bottles of my favorite type of glue on the last day the local hobby shop was open.
Same for zip-kicker. I always seem to run out right when I need it - well not anymore.
Paint. Despite the fact that I do paint (slowly) I've got minis that have been fighting for years & years wearing only a coat of grey/white primer or a base coat. So obviously I'm not too worried about paint overall. But along with the glue I did pick up extras of colors I tend to use alot.

Our local store has spent the time getting their web shopping service up and running. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like they're trying to keep restocking supply.

I agree that most people aren't going to burn through their backlog quickly unless they're brand new to the hobby, but one month of this sounds incredibly optimistic to me at this point. Sometime in June or even July (in the US, anyway) seems more likely as an end date.

This is true. I have:
* A giant pile-o-Ork bitz - that will one day (really, I swear! Maybe in 9th ed.) coalesce into an actual army. It'll yield about 4k pts of Orks + stuff. Right now I've got around 300 pts built.
* A never opened 1st ed core box of Battlefleet Gothic - left over from a fizzled campaign. I bought the box, had to work on the night the group had set to learn Gothic, everyone HATED it & that aspect of the campaign was dropped.
* A 5lb bag of tiny Kislivites for Warmaster. That's how GW shipped them. EVERYTHING in one giant bag. Local interest in Warmaster died before I ever got them all sorted out let alone built/painted.
* A complete Lizardman Bloodbowl team.

I have zero unpainted models. And no models to assemble. playing is the only thing I was doing. now without school, training and being able to go to the store, I slowly getting more and more crazy. Specialy as my mom isn't at home.

Nothing unbuilt, very few things still not primed but the large majority of my models only has a basecoat on.
I'd need a year or so of lockdown before I start worrying about running out of supplies, a decade before I run out of models.

I got rid off my pile off shame shortly before, because yes i wanted to finish. But then the whole corona schtck happened and i bought a reserve which i am through basically aswell.

(SC CSM, Possessed and Rubrics.) still working on the MoP and venomcrawler. then painting and then i am out of grey stokpile and will be forced to build terrain.
Not that building terrain isn't fun, just, well, kinda iffy because i allways get wierder ideas and needs for it then i assume in my planning phases and then have to get these supplies and now with all the locked down stuff that will hardly be happening.

I'm also in the UK. All of the webstores I use are pretty much down to backorders now, they still have bits, but you'd have to spend some time putting an order together that got you free shipping.

If I was in lockdown for 3 years I probably wouldn't get through my backlog. I'm running low on some undercoats and a couple of paints, but I've got enough core colours to keep going on something for some time to come.

How many have sufficient paints in stock?

Also I doubt it's just month GW is out. We are talking about supply(both miniatures AND paints) for months.

The store's branch in capital city for example is already out of wraithbone spray. Good thing my local branch had at least one can which I reserved. But after another 2 months how much gw paints they have? Replacing them isn't easy due to shade match. I have yet to find ulthuan grey(key colour for my sisters of battle) from army painter(the other paint brand I could buy) for example. Suggestions welcome if they have 100% match!

I'm in exacly the same pickle, and having to be really careful with the primer I have left (about 1/3 of a can?). I have the added issue that my colour scheme relies on working from a wraithbone base, so I don't have much choice out there.

A friend of mine told me that both Element and Zatu Games, seem to have put their 40K prices up.

I figure the UK market drying up faster makes sense; the UK stock is likely more produced as needed whilst overseas gets bulk orders.

Meanwhile there's more GW stores on the streets here, which are all closed up. 3rd parties are using or adding mail order services to keep trading so chances are in other countries that stock is at at least taking some of the edge off the stocks running out for a bit. Though of course there's also likely some panic buying going on (not just people buying before stocks run out but also perhaps buying before their own casual cash runs out if their work is halted/stalled).

The only bonus for the UK is that in theory once GW reopens the stock should restore the quickest.

I, like many others have a backlog that should last me a good while, but my local newsagents stocks GW models and paints, and has quite a large range, so if needs be I can get stuff. Its mainly paints. I actually bought some pots from them yesterday.

I contacted Element and they told me they only have what's left in stock and won't be getting anything else from GW due to their total lockdown, in a month or two I wouldn't expect there to be much stock of any GW models anywhere, although like most I have quite a backlog to work through.
As far as primers are concerned, Halfords (in the UK at least) has always been my preferred choice, and they're still open.

I have a handful of Chaos Warriors and Bloodreavers not built yet, but full armies? Nope. I have at least 5000pts of each flavor of the 4 Chaos Gods and almost as much in Slaves to Darkness (granted, Archaon is almost 1000pts on his own). Add to that Magnus, Morty and a Kytan and I’m sitting on a ton of built stuff. Lots to paint still, currently “Khorne and S2D” are doing it for me. Any time I get bored w/one god, I switch it up a bit. Although I’m currently eyeing the original Blades of Khorne SC box now OOP (I found a source). That’ll get me another 10 Blood Warriors, 3 more Skullcrushers and a Slaughterpriest.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
