Hi guys,
I was wondering, is there any story, fan fic maybe ? Any comics etc where we follow Chaos characters, without necessarily knowing they are, and present the Imperial side as the bad guys trying to destroy them and their world / civilization ?
Like, the opposite of the normal view we have ?

this has actually begun to become a bit of a tired B plot in some of the horus heresy books TBH

In the Gaunt's Ghost series there is a discussion with one of the Chaos field marshals. I believe it was in Traitor General, or maybe the book after? Either way, the chaos character talks about how they have their own worlds with their own populations and economies. They are fighting for worlds to gain/maintain resources for their own people. They even use some cool warptech to create a pseudo wormhole so they can transfer water from the planet to another that needs it. It was interesting to hear their side of it and to see the enemy painted as more than just a war machine bent on getting even with Big E. It actually painted that chaos character as an "okay" person with ideals, interest of people, and legitimate justifications.
There are also several instances where you get a point of view without reference and don't immediately know who the good guy is. I believe it was with "The 9", which are characters in the later books in and around Traitor General and after. Its a long series and been many years so its hard to pinpoint which book is which anymore.

I read the nightlord omnibus and it did a decent job of making the night lords into human beings with their own minds, personalities, friendships, etc.
It also kept them evil and monstrous too, with torture and mass destruction going on because "10,000 years ago the emprah wronged our primarch!"
On one hand it did make the characters as individuals into people with some good traits, but as a whole it just made chaos seem totally pointless and good for nothing.

The first book in the Word Bearers trilogy does this quite nicely, where a captured population are enslaved, indoctrinated and converted.
