Heh, might be a fun activity for the weekend to go inventory the shelf. Chunk of 2nd, pretty much all of 3rd, Marine book for the rest, with Eldar picking up again at 6th.

2nd ed. Codex Genestealers and Deathwing? I don't remember them. A Genestealer cult list was available in the back of Codex Tyranids and Deathwing were just a single entry in Codex Angels of Death, as far as I remember?

Now that i look through them again i think they are the original space hulk codexes with mission scenerios including the story of "two heads talking"

Here are mine in no particular order. Not shown are the current Knights codex, and several 3rd ed pamphlet codexes: Catachans, Blood Angels, Armageddon, Dark Angels, Craftworld Eldar, and 3 copies of Assassins (no idea how that happened).

Edit: Sorry for the bad picture, don't know what's up with my phone today. I've pretty much stopped at this point with re: to codexes. Had enough of the carousel.

I'll be honest, I never found many codices worth keeping after 2nd edition, unless I was playing the edition. 2nd edition were by far the best in my opinion (quality, writing, lore, etc.).

So I've got all of those, and then just the two I currently own for 8th edition. I generally toss or "lose" them after an edition. For example, the 8th edition Eldar codex is just regurgitating the original 2nd edition content...but worse, if that makes sense. The quality of writing is generally just a bit poorer and it feels more like a sales gimmick than a quality piece of lore/background.

2nd edition:
Space Wolves
Angels of Death
Ultramarines
Orks
Tyranids
Imperial Guard
Eldar
Sisters of Battle
Assassins (Smallest codex ever released by GW I believe, it's more of a pamphlet)

I also have the combined articles for 2nd edition Necrons, but that amounts to around 4-5 pages total, split between two or three White Dwarf magazines.

Fully agree with you here. 2nd ed was the pinnacle of background, lore, etc. After that, it’s a lot of the same stuff, mostly rehashed. With the new crunch for the edition. I will occasionally delve into my 3-7th codexes for a historical reference (How long has it been like this?) or for specific things (like the full UM chapter listing in the 3rd ed codex) But for the most part they just sit on the shelf.

The order of those books is bizarrely fascinating. The earliest at the end, 3rd in the middle, then middle left, then middle right and the most recent at the beginning.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

A lot of mine had to go to storage for space issues (only the 8E, Anaphelion Project & Gathering Storm books are on the shelf), but from memory...some of the codex editions I'm not 100% sure on

2E Rulebook & Dark Millennium (boxed set)

3E Rulebook
.Tau
.Space Marines (Ultramarines?)

4E Rulebook
.Necrons
.Imperial Guard
.Tau
.Space Marines
.Eldar
.Imperial Armor 1 & 2 (?)

5E Rulebook
.Necrons
.Space Marines
.Imperial Guard
.Tyranids
.Grey Knights
.Chaos Space Marines
.Eldar
.Tau

6E/7E Rulebook
.Imperial Guard
.Skitarii
.Cult Mechanicus
.Eldar
.Space Marines
.Grey Knights
.Chaos Space Marines
.Chaos Daemons
.Imperial Knights (1st & 2nd release)
.Orks
.Fracture of Beil-Tan
.Return of the Primarch
.Anephelion Project
.Apocalypse

8E Rulebook & Battle Primer (in print)
.CA 2018
.Urban Conquest
.All indexes
.Adeptus Mechanicus
.Astra Militarium (IG)
.Craftworlds
.Custodes
.Chaos Space Marines (2nd release only)
.Space Marines (1st & 2nd release)
.Dark Angels
.Eldar
.Genestealer Cults
.Tyranids
.Tau

OTHERS
Adeptus Titanicus (Original and re-release)
Stormcloud Attack
Kill Team (7E & 8E)
Necromunda (original)
Shadow Wars: Armageddon

I wasn't intending to get the 8E codexes, but after I got the Custodes book as a gift and then caved and bought the Tau codex, I decided a bookshelf of 8E books looked better than a mix of 6/7E and 8E books. The only 6/7E codexes on my shelf are the Grey Knights & Orks. The former because I don't use them much at all and was waiting to see if they would get a new codex, and the latter because I don't see a need to shell out for as my youngest son doesn't "get" the game (he's autistic) for the orcs he plays with.

Because when I played my 1 & only game of 7th I wasn't even aware that the edition had changed.
For the most part I was playing WWII games mid-6th through all of 7th & often working on the shops 40k evening. I was about to file an order for the Rules & the Guard codex (? I think - I forget wich of my forces I decided to start the treadmill again with - but it was likely Guard) but before I got around to doing it the local play group cratered. And that was it for 40k until some of us picked it back up in mid '18 with 8th.

SoB
All CA volumes
WD - the issues covering Assassins
* PA - the only volume I'll add will be the one with the Ad-mech, assuming that's where the rules for that goofy looking flyer show up. If not Pa, then whatever the book turns out to be.
* FW - whatever the new books turn out to be. I've got expensive resin that wants rules.

Every Tyranid codex and both Anphelion Project imperial armour books (because I love my bugs <3 ), and the daemon hunters and witch hunters codexes. I regret getting rid of my copy of codex Armageddon.

Looking for fun articles on painting, tactics and wargaming? Are you after a new regular blog to follow? Are you a bit bored with nothing better to do?

If the answer to any of the above is 'well, I guess' you could probably do worse than read my blog! Regular wargaming posts, painting and discussions

My collection is going to sound unimpressive, but I've got:

-3E Dark Eldar

-6E Imperial Guard

-7E Imperial Guard
-7E Space Marines
-7E Skitarii
-7E Imperial Agents
-Death From The Skies
-War Zone Damocles: Kauyon
-Imperial Armour - Aeronautica

-8E Index: Imperium 1 and 2
-8E Imperial Guard
-8E Space Marines (old version)
-8E Drukhari
-8E Adepta Sororitas
-Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising

I kinda miss the thin softback codexes of earlier editions, even though you could not easily lie them down flat on the gaming table. They were less cumbersome.

.

Cadians, Sisters of Battle, Drukhari, Custodes

On the other side, it takes just a minute to snap a picture, but actually sitting down and inventorying and listing everything is a non-trivial amount of time and effort.

Still might do it, but not on a workday.

I swear it was purely coincidental. My son reads them constantly, and I’m always putting them back on the shelf.

I only snapped a pic of my 40k books. My WHFB collection is in another bookshelf, and right below the codexes is an entire shelf of Forgeworld books - Vraks, Anphelion, Badab, Painting Masterclass, Imperial Armour, etc., and the 40k RPG stuff and art books, etc. And other shelves house the White Dwarf collection.

Since a picture won't help much as a big chunk of them are german, here's a list:

5e (I started here):
- Mini-rulebook from AoBR
- Cities in Flames (Really awesome book!)
- Codex Space Marines
- WD 198 for the Stormtalon
- Codex Grey Knights
- Codex Chaos Daemons
- Codex Dark Eldar

6e:
- BRB
- Codex CSM
- Codex SM
- Codex DA
- Codex Chaos Daemons
- Codex Tau Empire
- Crusade of Fire

7e:
- Codex Khorne Daemonkin
- Codex Blood Angels
Not played that one. Just got the books cheap to try to revert them to 6th. So... you're having fun with 8e?

The other 40k related books:

- Killteam rulebook
- Adeptus Titanicus rulebook

Necromunda 18:
- Softcover rulebook
- Gang War 1
- Hardcover rulebook
- Gangs of the Underhive
- Book of Peril
- Book of Judgement
- Book of Ruin
- House of Chains
- Dark Uprising

FFG RPGs:
- Dark Heresy rulebook
- Inquisitor's Handbook
- Radical's Handbook
- Disciples of the Dark Gods
- Rouge Trader rulebook
- Black Crusade rulebook
- Tome of Fate
- Tome of Blood
- Hand of Corruption

The rest:

Had a pretty decent book shelf of old codexes a few years ago. Nearly every factions 5th edition book when I was collecting rather than playing. When I had to move to a new apartment, I gave most of the old books to friends and nt FLGS.

Kept the 3rd edition Ork book, and 3.5 Chaos. The 2 books that really got me into the hobby.
