I think I have four other Total War games in my library that I have never played, but free is a good price. Thanks!

I did play a fair bit of Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms after I moved house last year and had no internet. I managed to wipe out the Jehovah-worshiping nations and spread Paganism throughout all of Europe

Also worth noting -

Every other Total War release except for those connected to the Warhammer games (discounted last week) and Three Kingdoms (the most recent game) is heavily discounted right now.

I do love me some Shogun 2, but I feel like it didn't hold the hours for me that other total war games did because it was too....I think the word is, good? Shogun 2 is one of the few total wargames that doesn't do one of two things

1) present you with a totally impossible task of conquering a ridiculously gigantic world that would take 5,000 hours to totally conquer (Warhammer, Rome 2)

2) Present you with an absolute clownfiesta of exploitable mechanics that allow for the kind of crazy situations that are fun precisely because of how blatantly and obviously unintended they are (Medieval 2, Empire)

When I look back...I spent the most time on category 2 total war games, by very very far. To me, nothing beats the Elephants Conquer Europe empire run.

step 1: Play as an indian faction

Step 2: Discover europe, wait for the inevitable trade request of one of your indian territories for a european territory

Step 3: purposefully lose your indian territories or trade them for moar europe

step 4: Get elephants. Once you get elephant units they are the only military units you are allowed.

Stomple your foes to the dust with full stack armies of 150 elephants fighting armies of 1500 soldiers.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

So it turns out that Fall of the Samurai or whatever the one with that great trailer that cuts from "Super folded steel katana!" to "Look at this Gatling gun! YEEHAW!" half-way through, is a stand-alone expansion. Didn't know that.

But it's also 75% off, thankfully, including all its DLC.

When it was released it was a stand-alone expansion. But when Creative Assembly announced the Saga format, it was switched over to that category as the first of the Saga games.

Not sure what a Saga game is, TBH.

And Steam still says it's a game that does not require the original to play.

Saga games are their smaller scale, 'experimental' games- Thrones of Britannia and the upcoming Troy.
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/a-total-war-saga-announce-blog/

They dressed it up for the blog, but I suspect its more an internal designation where they let the C team screw around with ideas that they'll port into future games if people like them, rather than take risks with real titles.
I think three kingdoms benefited from some of the trial and error of Thrones, but that's all Thrones really amounted to.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.
