Hi guys! I’m starting a challenge at my local club and I wanted a theme like the mini series “Afro samurai” if you haven’t seen it, the concept is that anyone can challenge the guy who has the number two headband, but only the guy with the number two headband can challenge the guy with the number one headband. I’m trying to think of a way to convert this into a 40k theme. It doesn’t need to involve headbands, but something similar would be cool, or at least something like a trophy number one could have. I’m looking for a title for the number one guy and number two guy and a name for the challenge. I though of naming them “the emperor” or “grand master”, but that probably wouldn’t be cool for a chaos or Xenos player. I don’t know a lot about the 40k lore, I’m looking for any suggestions.

That's a really cool idea.
I would play it with a small points format like 1000, 750 or even 500 points maximum. This would keep the games short and sweet, keep the rotation of 1st and 2nd spots moving regularly, and avoid having one guy with a super fine tuned tournament list just dominating.
That way the title could even change hands several times in an evening of game play, and make it more exciting for everyone.

Very cool idea. I agree with having the games be smaller perhaps rotating from 750-1500 in 250 point increments.
A 3D printed Blackstone Fortress would be a cool neutral signifier of first place.
And the Eye of Night for the second place.
Perhaps 1st is called The Ascendant and 2nd is The Aspirant.

Make two troops one hq mandatory at 500 points, Troops must be at least 25% of points. No named characters.

Hi, I did a similar thing with DBA back in the day. It’s a limited size, limited space wargame with simple rules. The League ran on a placing system, where you -had- to accept a Challenge from an equal or lower placed player, but could refuse a challenge from a higher placed player. Placing was governed by ‘game average’ - games played against games won.
Look at the ‘40k in 40 minutes’ rules for some inspiration.

I might suggest a pyramid. My local GW ran a thing where there was a #1, 2x #2, 4x #3, and 8x #4.
To get in, you had to challenge a #4, then you could challenge a 3, then 2, then you could challenge the person on top. Lots of ways to challenge onto the board, but fewer options further up. A win put the challenger up and the loser down, and a loss by the challenger kept a status quo.
Have to play within 2 weekends of the challenge... if the challenged went up in between, you could do a “double step” up and the challenged could do a double drop to your spot.
It’s a bit more open than a straight ladder.
