Now that I have taken up painting again, I'm running into the little issue of yellow. It's a colour that I like, and for Medieval heraldry, it's basically a must. It's just that whichever yellow I use, I always need a billion layers (which doesn't look too good) and even then, the slightest error later is impossible to fix. Does anyone have recommendations for good bright yellow paints or better yet, tips on how to paint it properly?

You have to build up the colour,

If I need a yellow over a blue or red, I'll start with averland sunset or a brown then layer the finishing colour

I just tend to use yellow ink over a bone or white base.

I usually start from a light brown and build up from there. I've found he's vx88 to be a good starting point.

White and yellow, the hardest to master, but the best looking colours.

In terms of yellow, i have abandoned the normal paints, i just use inks and shades over pure white background as they seems to have more pigment in them then normal paint.
One thing i do want to try but have not gotten around to is yellow oil paint. Shure, takes a week to dry but if it means i can do the yellow in 1 or 2 layers then the drying time is worth it.

I seem to recall that Contrast Iyanden Yellow has had some good feedback, maybe have a look at some of the YouTube reviews. I've used Gryph Hound Orange a fair bit, and found it to be very high pigment, and easy to use; from my understanding, orange paints have had a similar bad reputation to yellows when it comes to requiring multiple layers.

I always paint it white then paint yellow over. Casandra Yellow shade over white makes a nice yellow as well, but it can be a bit too orangish for some.
