There are specific mechs that are locked behind Flashpoints that don't pop until after the main campaign is over (Raven and Hatchetman at least), but almost all the rest are going to pop up in shops and battles.
That said, the main campaign is frankly crap (the writing is cartoon villainy crossed with death camps for literally no reason and more lostech than even Comstar should have), and you'll be way overpowered for the flashpoints and other dlc content by the end of the campaign.
Career mode presents the DLC in a more timely fashion and it just stays interesting longer.
Plus, the last dlc really fleshes out the list of mechs to the basic standards of classic battletech. The base game is rather lacking (though some of that was lawsuit related that they had no control over)
If you get it at all, get one of the bundles with all of it (digital deluxe and the shadow hawk alternate model aren't worth anything, but the 3 dlc are if you like the game).

Would recommend. Carreer mode is way better, as Voss said,
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Even better option for you-FREE battletech made by fans for fans-they do large organised matches (chaos marches ) on the weekends. because it is fan run there is no advertising so peak times for server usage tend to be weekends and evenings US time zones
