Hi everyone,

I'm putting together a new Death Guard army, and I plan on including a defiler or two. Problem is, I despise the GW model. Without a better suggestion, I'll mostly likely go with either plague hulks or soulgrinders, but I'm hoping you can offer me some other suggestions. I love the look of the Maggotkin models, but I'm not sure I'd be doing my opponents justice by bringing a Glottkin, or one of the smaller ridden monsters like Morbidex Twiceborn.

Help me out, please. I'll take any and all suggestions you have!

It's a bit expensive but the blood slaughterer from FW might a good choice with a little conversion work.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I built this before the plague hulk was released:

based on a soul grinder, the centre tube of a cash till roll & loads of guitar wire & green stuff.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

That model looks great, bubber! If I had the skill, or the patience, for something like that, I would attempt it.

Anyone able to provide size comparisons between the defiler and possible proxies like the maggotkin models I mentioned, the blood slaughterer, and a soulgrinder?

the soul grinder uses the same leg sprue as the defiler but the body is taller I think.

Say what you want, but those look really cool! Where are they from?

Thank you for posting this. Those would indeed be preferable to the travesty of plastic and sadness that GW tries to pass off as a legitimate model. Alas, I have cats, and those models would be short-lived in my home.

They come up randomly on ebay and aliexpress. If you search "crab tank model" you should find a bunch. They are made from plastic usually so I dunno if cats would go after them. Usually resin it looks like so a cat would shatter them if they do attack them and knock them down.

You could try combining an Onager and a dreadnought. Probably need to bulk up the core a bit. Or a combination of an Armiger and Onager maybe?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Depends how out there you wan to go. There are the aforementioned Maggoth lords, and Reaper minis have a whole host of Bones minis that can be harvested for parts. Mudgullet (aka a D&D Froghemoth) is a good base for one.

Here's mine all converted up (which I incidentally tend to run as a Maggoth lord, to go full circle...) to give you an idea.

What about those big nurgle beasties with the rider from End Times?

Or that tentacle beast thing from chaos fantasy?

I like the big Nurgle beasties with riders, I just wonder how far out of 'correct' size range they are. I don't want to model for advantage, intentionally or not. Are any of them even kind of comparable?

The Defiler has a big foot print with its big legs, but with a large enough base one of the beasties should work.

Anyone have measurements?

If I recall correctly it is the same width as a Knight Base, so a ~17cm round base with be appropriate

The Glottkin is on a 130mm base, while the smaller riden beasties are on a 100mm base. That being said, I guess I'm more concerned with their height being a problem, with LOS. Estimating from the pictures, the ridden beasties are around 125-140mm to the top of the rider's head, while the Glottkin looks to be about 180mm.

I don't know the height of a defiler but rocks/ruins can always make it up if the beasties are too short.

I'm actually worried the ridden monsters are too tall, not to short. Though I'd love to see a picture with a defiler, ridden monster, and glottkin all lined up.

Hoping GW refreshes a number of these CSM models as they suck big time, not sure what look they were going for
