It's basically a satire/comedy of current events via puppets.
Anyone in politics and celebrity culture is fair game.
I used to love the original series with all of the Russians (Soviets then!) looking exactly the same and Reagan who would fall over, his head would open up and then a pea would roll out

Shows like this worked back in the 80s because people didn't actually think politicians could be this stupid.
Since 2016, that fallacy has been laid to rest. There's at least one nation-state government that has put satirists out of work because they can't make anything up that would out-weird the "normal".

Back in the 80s Spitting image had an enormous impact on the image of celebrities and politicians amongst the population.
Without them, as a kid, I would have had no idea who Michael Portillo, John Major, Michael Hesletine and basically any member of the cabinet or shadow cabinet actually were.
The caracitures basically became the people in the popular imagination of everyone. It's an absolute travesty that it'll only be available on Britbox it deserves to be back on TV and available to all.
