I initially got into this a month ago to go to stores and meet people, which some are opening here but not hosting many games. Im currently only playing kill team size 40k games but I was going to play a few solo combat patrol and incursion size games this weekend.

I have space, available units of armies and the terrain to do it but I was curious to see if anyone is playing any big 2k points game at home now.

I'd chime in that my solo 2k point game takes all five turns to play because I'm always aware of what my "opponent" is going to do.

It's a good practice for actual games with others, trying out different strategies and deployments, but the most entertaining part is dice rolling.

For each "side", if you have a decision just 4+ roll it to add randomness to the game.

I've been doing solo home gaming of various sorts for months now. Still haven't moved to 9th, but I've played a few games of 8th.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Im surprised how entertaining it is, for each side I just make the best possible play, and the random aspect of the dice makes it work well for me.

It is helping me drawbacks and positives for each unit much easier

do you anything special to randomize the terrain?

Honestly with regard to the terrain, I mainly just set it up in a way that looks cool to me while also still serving to work for game purposes (e.g. having some LoS blocking stuff). Beyond that, I just kinda set it up however it looks cool at the time with what I have.

Been playing solo games forever. If i didn't, most of my minis I've bought and painted would never see the table.

Genuine question to those of you that play solo games, how do you do it? I tried it once but it just felt extremely off, between how do you even deploy when you know you will be the one deploying the "opposing" army too and losing the feel of testing your might against an opponent I could never do it again afterwards.
As for the OP: lockdown/quarantine isn't that severe here so luckily garage hammer in modified form is still possible for the time being.

For me, I follow the same turn base deployment and I basically make the best choice for that half I am running. As long as you have the "best choice" mindset and add the randomness of the rolls, it actually becomes really good practice. I played a few combat patrol games that way and the time flew by

Ask any old school hex and counter historical wargamer, solo wargaming is the way MOST of the old heads do it. It's been a part of the hobby as long as the hobby existed.

I've considered making & playing a "how long can you last" style game, where I would make a 1000pt army and then assign all the units in my other army (EG orks) to a table and roll waves each turn.

EG:
Each turn 2D3 units arrive
roll to see which units, rerolling ones I've run out of models for
roll to see which board edge they arrive from

Then I'd play the horde's turns with genuine intent to kill the castle in the middle, and play the castle with a goal to survive as long as possible.

I don't think I could solo a normal game of 40k as I'm usually planning a few steps ahead, trying to trick my opponent. My strategies don't work if my opponent knows all about them, and so I'd be reduced to the blunt force of 2 of my armies against each other.

Nope.
Why in the world would I when Table Top Simulator exists? That's not perfect, but it beats playing solo/nothing....

It works well with a narrative in mind, you get to have your big hq showdown in the middle etc, you're just letting randomness carry the story through then.

Table Top Simulator is a videogame. A completely different experience than playing with miniatures, solo or not.

Basically started for me as a kid with airfix soldiers abd an older brother who didn't want to play. Since then, many game systems.
I generally play narrative but will sometimes play matched play either to test a list vs an opfor or test a mission. Definitely not the same as playing another person, but I still find it enjoyable.

like he says, its apples and oranges. You cant compare tabletop simulator to having physical miniatures on a table with terrain. I am sure it works for some people but 40k is the type of game that just dont work as well on TTS. Playing solo wargamming, with everything said in mind, beats out 40k TTS by a mile. TTS works best for other games but its wack for 40k and many other games.

At that point I rather just buy the new playstation and a headset.

ANY videogame system >TTS

I got the crusade books but will only play with those in a couple of months.

I am only going to play all of the missions in the books. With 5,000pt of marines, 2800 of Necrons and 1500 of admech, plus being ONLY a month into this game, I will have entertainment for a while.

that's a cool scenario. I think eventually I will set up an alamo type of thing as well but with a set large force and then maybe try a number of waves after

Why in the world would you even consider playing TTS 40k by yourself? You know it has multiplayer function right?
