Subject: Man, gw really did jack up the prices all of a sudden for this new stuff....

Went to my flgs today to pick up my books (50$ a piece hurts but ok) and the owner asked me if I wanted any of the new models. So I glanced at the prices and.... what the hell......
I knew the silent king was going to be expensive (165$) and I was ok with that. It's a center piece model on the level of mortarion or magnus, I am ok with this.
What I did not expect was the cost for the chaplain on bike (100$) or the atv (85$) or the new necron destroyer (75$).....
Thats a tad silly at this point. I get things go up in price over time, but you can buy an entire start collecting box for marines for 95$ or a single chaplain on bike for 100$???? When I got back into 40k after the start of 8th I was impressed at the prices gw was charging. I hadn't bought a model since back in 4th. And when they increased prices the last few years I was again ok with it. But this is silly. I see kitbashing definitely being a thing from outriders for the chaplain.....
What do you guys think?

If you're in the US (as your little flag indicates) and he's quoting those prices for the non-silent-king new stuff, he's talking out of his ass - here is the GW US pre-order page showing the new releases, and your "f" lgs is way off the mark on, well, everything - he's even added 10% onto the price of the Silent King.

Yeah - GW has Chaplain on bike at $45 and the Silent King as $150. Op - are you in Australia maybe? I see the American flag there but maybe you're on a VPN? If not, then your shop is doing something shady.

If you bought any of that, you need to go back to the flgs, they're not so f.
On the GW website the Chaplain on bike is $45. The ATV is $40.
Not saying that GW haven't increased costs of their part of the hobby though, especially with books for this, books for that, books you may need, books you will need.
Take Dark Angels. Don't have a 9th edition codex yet. For their "still valid" 8th rules set you need two books - the codex and the Psyschic Awakening book they're in. That's £50/$80 for what is actually an incomplete rules set - because you then either need the free PDF and/or the BRB to actually play a game.
Just getting fed up with it personally. Been GW gaming since the 2nd edition starter (a few years before that came out actually). 2nd was a far more complete and less expensive, even adjusted for inflation, game, despite it's baffling array of cards and some current factions not being in the game back then.

Aren't prices in different stores in different stats different, because of different taxs in the US ?
Anyway here no one bought or is planning to buy the primaris buggy. The modeling store here had some navy seals tamiya dune buggies and people just bought those, much cheaper then the GW models, and because the buggies are two seaters they put intercessors as driver and gunner. Look in my opinion better then the GW models, even if they are a bit larger, but it is hard to judge without seeing the GW model in real life.

Generally taxes aren't much more than 10% (and in many areas less than that), also at least in the US retailers don't include tax in their advertised price.

Who is buying 8th edition rules now? We know Dark Angels are getting a book at the start of 2021. We also know that it's a supplement to the 9th edition Space Marine book. The only armies 'needing' the PA books are not any of the Codex Chapters. It's Chaos and Grey Knights.
The PDF that they put out on Monday also has all the Dark Angels specific units in it.

So, same deal then for 9th then. Two books.
And who is waiting until 2021 if they want a Dark Angels army now? For playing any army, besides Necron and Space Marines between now and when their codex is released (or a PDF) you still need the 8th edition rules.
Or you don't play.
So, yeah, especially as GW are still selling them and have said they are still valid and will work with 9th, it's not a stretch that people are still buying 8th edition codices at the very least.
And that PDF is another thing that personally frustrates me with GW at the moment - you have to go hunting online for FAQ for this, PDF for that, errata for this. Not everyone spends 100% of their time with their nose buried firmly up GW's backside gobbling up every little bit of "news" they release either via Warhammer Community or their email "newsletter".
It's all just a massive mess that is all over the place. GW need to start consolidating things.

I think I am glad I do all of my model and book purchases through selective buying on ebay, and get my money back when I do sell items (sometimes with a profit) . If I want to support my FLGS I will buy paints, brushes, and magazines, but never models at the exorbitant prices GW charges.

Are you aware that both 8th edition rulebooks (Codex, PA) containing Dark Angels rules will be made officially invalid with the Space Marine release tomorrow? Even barring that, advising/thinking to buy old books now when the new one is most likely only 2-3 months away is just not very sound. Everyone who wants to can get by just fine with online ressources, the codex or just Battlescribe.
If you aren't a tournament player, what does it matter to you how often GW brings out FAQs or erratas? You can look it up whenever it suits you on their website.
If you feel you need to be up to date with rule clarifications, then I don't see why both checking the website AND/OR having the news delivered to you via mail is frustrating for you?

It sounds like either he doesn't trade models often and got confused on something or something really odd is going on. A regular GW store won't charge more than GW website and typically your local game store will charge equal or less than what GW charges since GW splits their product into two lines with different discounts for retailers (all the old "direct order only" is now accessible but retail stores don't get much discount so the price is very close to GW's direct price).
If he's charging way more then he's either got his prices WAY wrong or its not so friendly a store.

I love this concept that you have to go “hunting for FAQs”.
They’re on one page.

They have. WHC. Done. Pretending it’s complex doesn’t get you edge awards.

It's like GW should have a webpage for all of their FAQs and maybe another one for downloads.
Maybe someone on Dakka should make a sticky post of all of these FAQs, erratas and PDFs.

All right lets clear this up once and for all.
I want one 1 book for my army. 1 book for my main rules. Done.
I don't want to go looking on websites and then print PDF's out at a cost to me of ink and paper. I don't like using tablets for reading documents like we use for 40k. Neither do the people I play with.
There is nothing on the WHC front page when you land on it about that DA PDF or the others.
I have better things to do with my time than searching through web pages to find something or printing PDF's.
And yes it is frustrating, when you have to collate several sources just to build 1 complete up to date rules set - if I weren't bothered about playing with the new rules, I'd still be playing 2nd, we all would.

Just play with the book then.
Or, if you’re invested in the hobby, accept you need to invest some time in keeping up to date. Railing against that is futile, as that’s how it is and whining online won’t change that. Sorry, just facts.

This is the article that had all the information I linked. It was the front page for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
It really wasn't hidden. And honestly, the complaints about 'needing two books' is ridiculous.
We've had complaints about "books not having matching unit/weapon/tactic profiles" for multiple editions. Marines aren't really going to have that as a problem going forward, because all the core units are centralized in the main Codex.
You want your DA specific units? They're in the supplement, coming out in 2021. Or they're in the free PDF I linked.
The idea of people playing games in the UK or US right now is downright laughable in any regards, for reasons that we're not allowed to really discuss.

Yeah, I know. But for me, 40k has too many supplements. It's all getting a bit much. GW seem to be increasing the amount of supplements, rather than reducing them, and we all know it's part of their often shady business model.
Hmm, yeah, I wasn't reading that site Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Like I said, better things to do.
My choice. But I shouldn't have to go looking for things like that. I'm not a book collector nor a PDF collector.

No, no it's not. I visit my gaming buddy regularly still. We both take all the currently prescribed precautions. Neither of us socialise outside our own "bubble" that we're allowed here in the UK. We're at least 4ft apart at all times.
Scientifically there's no reason people can't do that.

Again, I and the people I game with don't like using tablets. Shouldn't have to. Therefore we won't use the app. Plus, I've been reading and hearing that GW's app is of a low quality.
I am aware there are various options. I don't like the all over the place model GW are employing for the rules of 40k. End of. It's an opinion. Doesn't really need picking apart.

Its a fair opinion to have. However, I doubt GW is going to change to a business model that makes them less money so we may as well adapt and use the tools they provide. I've used the app and would suggest you try it for $5 before passing judgement based off randoms on the internet. For looking up rules its incredibly easy and IMO with a little practice faster than using books. The army builder isn't finished yet but I'm pretty optimistic about it based off the rest of the app.

But, but, but.
I don't frequent social media looking for rules updates, to be honest I am not a regular user of social media. I don't go to any website specifically looking for rules updates. Like I said, better things and shouldn't have to.
You guys that do are all in your own little world, a microcosm.
I think that's part of the problem, in the wider gaming community there are plenty of people like me who don't do as you do. So yeah, to us, it is hidden. It's tucked away in places we don't look at regularly.
But because there are a minority of people like you guys, who are so vocal and active on many platforms, GW listen to you more than anyone else.
It's how we've ended up with an online PDF fest of a game. You buy your book(s), then you have to go check online to see if there's errata or extra PDFs because GW can't get things right in the first place!

I tried the app for free. Wasn't impressed. I'm not going to cough up money based on what I've heard and read. As someone above stated - you still have to buy the 9th edition books. And I've seen that stated by many reputable sources reviewing the app.
I'm afraid I don't share your optimism or for want of a better term fanboyism. No offence meant of course. I've been gaming with GW products for 35 or so years now. Maybe I'm ageing badly, but as I've stated before, the way GW are doing things is all getting a bit too much. But my regular gaming buddy likes to play 40k so yeah, I am having to put up with it.

Well, now you know. Or you knew before but just never care to check.
But it's not like they made a secret of this PDF existing. It's been talked about for months. It has zero to do with " GW can't get things right in the first place!" and everything to do with "updating multiple things at once!".
Something that people, supposedly, wanted.
But hey. You do you.

So to be fair to my flgs owner he gave me the sheet to look at prices and I was looking at his pricing for the entire set of models he got (100$ for 2 Chaplin bikes) so it was my mistake. A mod can close this thread if they wish as it appears to have gone completely off the rails from my original intent and my intent was wrong to begin with. I apologize for any inconvenience.
