Subject: Magnetizing boxes for home storage...

My entire collection of models is currently stored in multiple boxes, typically the original GW paper boxes for vehicles (rhinos, land raider, etc...), as I don't have a display cabinet.
I'd like to magnetize those boxes and all the bases of my miniatures using A4 magnetic sheets. I'd like to ask about the appropriate thickness of those sheets: is 0.5mm enough? 0.5mm thick sheets are very cheap and super easy to cut, but I have no idea if they are strong enough.
What's your experience about this matter? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

My impression of magnetic sheets is they aren't strong enough.
Instead what works better is a simple metal sheet coupled with rare earth magnets (of a high n number) in the base of each model.

I'd also be interested in finding out about this as I have a few boxes that would benefit from magnetisation.

Thanks, I was already considering putting rare earth magnets under bases as sheets typically have magnetic properties only on one side. I've seen several tutorials on youtube, many involving magnetic sheets but in not one of those videos there's a reference about the appropriate quality of those magnetic sheets. 0.5mm is handy because sheets can be cut using regular scissors and they are the cheapest. Strenght shouldn't be super high as there would be the risk of breaking the miniatures when you pick them up, they just need to stay where they are if I shake the box.

I second what Overread said. The problem with magnetic sheets is that they aren't very strong to begin with. They're only weakly magnetic, and don't have enough ferrous material for magnets to hold onto them.
I use 22ga steel sheet (~0.8mm) cut with tin snips, riveted to the bottom of plastic bins, and then neodymium magnets in the models' bases. Obviously that's a lot more involved, but it works. 3x2mm N48-N52 magnets are sufficient for plastic human-sized models, but anything on a 40mm base or larger gets a 5x2mm to stay affixed.
Is this intended to be just for storage, or for transport? Even with the magnetic sheets, it seems like a lot of work for just a storage system.

Only storage. But I'm tired of slowly removing from the shelves those boxes containing miniatures because otherwise they collide with each other.
In the future I may think of relying on magnetized solutions for transport the miniatures as I can't stand foam either, but it's not what I'm looking for at the moment.

I agree on all that Catbarf said and I will strongly recommend that you do as he/ she said. If you do magnetize in this way and use a plastic container you can actually magnetize the lid or lock on the container and store your models in both the container and the lid.
I’ve done it this way for my pink horrors, bloodletters and csm and it works great for both storage and for transport.
One small thing too remember tho, try to get the magnets as flat with the base as possible. If you get too much air between metal sheet and magnet you won’t get a good grip if none at all.
Good luck whatever you decide!
